I got fucked over by the time limit exactly once despite taking my time, the argument about Special Rings becomes null because if you've been exploring correctly you can actually collect all chaos emeralds as soon as Chemical Plant. Exploring in Mania, like 3&K, isn't so much about finding Special Rings rather than discovering hidden pathways that'll improve your perfomance in the levels in subsequent playthroughs. It's pretty obvious he played through the game only once (if he even finished it at all) and called it a day, the review ends extremely abruptly.

Think the only time I ever timed out was Flying Battery act 2. It's such a huge level and fun to explore but the boss takes a long time, with Robotnik not even taking damage sometimes even when you slam the bumper off the spikes

His criticism that the Chaos Emerald minigames being hidden rather than requiring getting to the end of the stage with enough rings makes it more difficult to access them is somewhat valid, although going back to that style would require them to either A be accessible just before the bosses or B have separate boss zones (which is not a good way to handle them).

The lack of cutscenes between a lot of stages is a valid criticism too. The game most likely got rushed at some point and they didn't put them in all the stages.

The fact that he ran into the 10 minute time limit means he's a chump who's bad at the game. None of the bosses require that much waiting, not even the shitty spider boss.

Also he totally mischaracterizes the Sonic Cycle and how it works in the fandom. When it was in full swing (Sonic Heroes through Sonic Unleashed), people realized things were looking shitty before the games were even out, and a lot of fan shit on those games as soon as they were out. After that you have a few games that are still defended by fans and several game that were either disliked from their reveal or (like the one he uses to explain the idea) mostly disliked by their release.

Despite being a comedian they're still reviews and represent what he thinks of the game, I'm just pointing our why his arguments are flawed. The game has flaws, we knew that already. But it's not like it criminally undermines the quality of the game or how much it can be enjoyed.
His issue with the time is a bit excessive but understandable as the levels are larger, but if you're skilled enough, the limit is never a problem, and the next time you play it, you can go from barely making the 9 minute gap to completing it in 5.

He's clearly biased in his opinion as he claims the old games have annoying gimmicks, and Mania inherits those gimmicks, so it's logical he would not like the game as much. Part of the challenge of these gimmicks is that you need to slow down to explore those hidden areas, special rings, etc. It takes a balance of those skills. They are not for everyone.
Even little things like the jump sound effect, he's clearly nitpicking and his review isn't entirely balanced.

Hopefully Mania 2, whenever that is, can make the game more creative with its gimmicks and appeal more to newcomers and veterans. And will improve those gimmicks to accommodate speed and its platforming. I agree Mania taking too much from the qualities of its predecessor is an issue, but Mania nails the tone, aesthetic, and the levels, if you loved the old ones, are fun to play with these new design layouts and gimmicks. Blame iizuka if you wanted more original content and less remixed.

With that out of the way, I really don't see a problem with this review, he has opinion of Sonic and if he wasn't fond of the classics in the first place, he clearly wasn't going to enjoy Mania. And that's okay.

I got stuck in the ball roll animation on the Act 1 midboss of Stardust Speedway. If you stay at the far right of the screen, the boss will never hit you because the attack patterns are static so none of the attacks go to the end of the screen.

Some stages can feel like they drag on too long, but I'll chalk it up to playing all the levels blind and being mediocre at 2D platformers than padding. I can see it happening on TM Act 2, but aside from that, just how bad do you have to be to take 10 minutes on any other level barring getting stuck due to a glitch?

This is what I've been wanting for 15 years.

I love the original Adventure games and think they nailed how sonic should play in 3D; hell, I'd say the 5/6 character styles we got aside Big in SA1 were near perfect aside minor issues like Amy's ground speed and Knuckles' stages being too small in SA1 and the radar system being bad in SA2 (although this one was mitigated by the hint system becoming godlike, but still).

But, I'd still really love to see a refinement of the concepts those games (and 06, in the case of Shadow and Silver's gamplay styles) offered. There's so much potential that's just been untapped since Sonic Team's been fucking about for endless years.

I finally got around to finishing Sonic 1 for the first time yesterday and even though I'd never been as far into it as Labyrinth Zone act 3 before, I still managed to finish it without even coming close to a timeout and that stage is easily more time consuming than almost anything in 2, CD, 3&K, or Mania.

This is the only part I agree with. It worked in Sonic 1 and 2 when the levels were short ads fuck, but S3&K and Mania have a bunch of levels that really push you up against the limit even when going fast.
