I find the aesthetic of Ikrauga to be pleasing more so thaan something like Uncharted with emphasis on hyper realistic facial movement shenanigans or whatever. I'd rather watch a movie if I wanted that stuff. Ikaruga and many of these arcade style games look and sound like a video game is supposed to

Furthest I've gotten in Ikaruga is level 4 on Normal. Beaten easy mode but easy mode is easy mode.

I'm kind of iffy about the game to be honest. The main thing that bugs me is that I wish you could practice a level once you've reached it, not just once you've beaten it. That would just cut down on redundancy. Though maybe I'm just spoiled because that's how the touhou games do it, I thought those games were tough but now that I'm branching out into other shmups I'm starting to realize those games are sort of baby mode shmups, at least on normal difficulty.

Been wanting to try DoDonPachi forever but cant get MAME to run it right. I can play DonPachi at least, that one is actually a lot of fun.

Can someone explain to me what the big deal about Ikaruga is?

I've played it and it's fun and the color switching mechanic is neat, but I don't really see why it's so consistently ranked leagues above other shmups. I don't think it's a bad game by any means, but I don't see what's so great about it.

Can someone explain to me what I'm missing? Why do so many people like it more than other shmups?
