I just beat pic related, and holy hell.
>go on comfy field trips with good friends and explore their homeland, culture and learn more about their personality
>interact with what might be the most engrossing world in video games where practically every NPC has their own little arc
>do normal school things with your buddies like swim classes, hanging out on days off and doing fun side quests
>explore dungeons abroad and delve into the old schoolhouse, battling enemies and bosses of every size and shape
>returning to your home base, the academy in Trista, and having that soothing melody play

I fucking cried when it was over, knowing I have to wait for CS2 to come out.
>>
Durante, hurry the fuck up with sequel port!
Let's at least do it in 2018!
Meanwhile I will shorten my December with Okami.
>>
How the fuck do you people play these long-ass games?

The longest I've ever played a single-player game was 30 hours straight.

I'm about 25 hours into this now and there is no end in sight. Not even a hint that we're starting to wrap up.

Jesus Christ, the game is very fun in that relaxing sort of way, but holy fuck how long is this? And there are 2 sequels that continue the story?

This is Tolkien-tier length.
>>
>>390117118
>And there are 2 sequels that continue the story?
Are you tryin to tell me you didn't already devote 300 hours to the previous games in the overarching series? And have not readied yourself for the next trilogy after this trilogy?
>>
Does this game require playing the other trails of games or is it stand alone?
>>
>>390116832
Is Durante in charge of porting the sequel too?
>>
>>390117671
No trails game requires playing another trails game. The plot hasn't even come together yet.
>>
>>390117487
>there's even more
How? How full of lore and characters can one fucking universe be before we call it too much?
>>
>>390117758
So trails of games are just like tales of series then where all just separate games in the same franchise. Got it, I'll look into playing one sometime soon

Sky was much, much better. That said I still enjoyed Cold Steel. The Trails series really is something special. Can't think of another series that spans this many games that's all this closely interconnected.

Here's how it works.

>Trails in the Sky
First Chapter
Second Chapter
3rd

>Trails of Zero
Zero (Never released in the west, has a fan translation patch, check the Falcom General on /vg/ for more info)
AO (Currently in the process of getting a fan translation patch... hopefully)

>Trails of Cold Steel
Cold Steel 1
Cold Steel 2
Cold Steel 3 (releasing this month in Japan, expect an English TL in late 2018 on PS4, probably 2019 for PC)

You can start at the first game of each series EXCEPT for Zero which relies heavily on a select few cast members from the Sky series. Personally, I'd suggest starting at First Chapter and going on from there. If you start with Cold Steel you'll miss so many cool things.

I beat the game on Hard, because I'm a casual baby, but holy fuck can we all agree that was the WORST final boss fight of any game ever? I'll try to keep this spoiler-free, but:
>stats mean nothing, only level
>insanely RNG heavy, the last battle in the game is decided by percentages and what numbers the computer rolls
>party composition, quartz, equipment, items, learned skills - all mean nothing

I loved the emotional part of the fight, but holy fuck after 7 attempts my patience was officially out with this shit.

One of my absolute favorite tracks is the version of The Whereabouts of Light that plays when Estelle, Joshua, Ries, and Kevin are introduced respectively in Crossbell arc. It creates such a sweet nostalgic feeling that it's unreal.

God, don't remind me. I remember it took me about 4 hours of attempts before someone told me it was also level dependant so I grinded literally one level and just barely cleared it.
I tried it again after grinding to a much higher level and it still took me two tries.
Seriously, fuck that fight.
>>
>>390122067
It's readable. Going need some logic leap those.
>>
>>390117118
I split it up into sessions. 4-6 hours usually with a max of 8-10 when I get hooked. I can't do more or else I'll burn myself out and drop the game and forget everything that happens only to come back a few months later for the sake of beating it and have a way worse experience. Anything less and I'll be stuck in habit of dicking around for a few hours doing random shit and basically not getting any of the plot done.

Should I start with Trails in the sky or cold steel?

The "real" final boss, the boss at the bottom of the school house, felt waaaay more like a proper final boss than the one we actually got.

That guy was big, intimidating, mysterious, hit like a truck and had tons of unique abilities with vastly differing effects.

In my head HE was the final boss and the Azure Knight was just a nice emotional fight (that just happened to take me 18 tries).

Cold Steel technically comes AFTER Sky in the history of the world you play in, but honestly I'd still almost recommend Cold Steel.

If only because it looks so much better, and you grow way more attached to the characters (at least I did).

In Sky, there's a lot of traveling around, and thus leaving companions behind or having them split from your party. That doesn't really appeal to me.

In Cold Steel, your friends are your friends throughout the game. And I like that. Makes for much deeper bonds.

Okay I beat the CS a little while ago and here's what I thought:

Good:
>"Hard" difficulty is juuust perfect, requiring just enough skill without making it grindy at all. This should have been the game's "Normal".
>The Quartz system was amazingly fun to play around with. I never had enough slots. Not even when they were all unlocked. Never. Enough.
>The music is so good it's worth buying the OST for. And I don't say that lightly. Final Fantasy 9 was the last game I bought the OST for, and the fact that Cold Steel gets mentioned in the same context is probably the highest praise I can give it.
>A lot of really cool characters, Jusis, Fie, Machias, Laura and even Alisa were nicely fleshed out and rounded.
>I consider myself pretty good at "calling" things in JRPGs, there are very few things that can surprise me, but a twist near the end relating to the masked man (you'll know when you get there) genuinely caught me by surprise. Which is downright rare these days.

Bad:
>The last boss fight might be the worst designed fight in JRPG history. It's not had in the "beat your ass because you deserved it" hard, but hard because the computer rolled poor dice.
>The game opens with a battle at a fortress. This entire concept is stupid as shit as you have a lot of arts, characters, skills and crafts available here. It's very overwhelming and paces the start poorly.

Explain how I am wrong.
>>
>>390124107
Oh, and last point on bad:
>The game ended really abruptly. For a game that took its sweet time (and it worked for it) in all other aspects it was almost surreal to see the last cutscene of the game last, like 2 minutes and then boom, credits.
>>
>>390116832

Agreed. Hurry the fuck up Amerifat cunt. Port faster!
>>
>>390124107
>>The Quartz system was amazingly fun to play around with. I never had enough slots. Not even when they were all unlocked. Never. Enough.
This is were you're wrong and shows it's your first trails game, it's the literal definiton of casualized shit.
>>
>>390124368
What was wrong with it? Finding the balance between what arts you wanted/needed combined with what stats your build required, and what slots you had available on each character was loads of fun.

What would you have them change?

Does CS2 take place at Thors too? Or is the school-life over?
>>
>>390124229
It's not like this game is a trilogy or something. Sarcasm aside yeah it's understandable.
>>
>>390124789
No more school. Hard to have classes during a civil war.
>>
My pc is terrible so it cant play it. Does it comes to ps4?
>>
>>390117118
Because it got interesting pretty quick and get me hooked up, they drop hint from previous game from time to time, it spice everything up really well.

This game (as whole, not just few chapters) is just only introduction to the trilogy, mainly to introduce cast & new settings, it's just natural if you think that this game is slow, i mean Sky FC suffered the same problem.

This game alone is very long compared to your average RPGs, about 60~80 hours depending on your difficulty settings and what you did. There's turbo button for a reason.

If you can't stand it that the game is too long or slow, maybe this series isn't for you.

>This is Tolkien-tier length.

Its the kind of game where you really have to sit down and try to immerse yourself in its world and characters. The reward is you get a really fleshed out experience. Even if that experience has to take place over 3 games. I just treated the first game as more of a prologue and wasnt disappointed in the slightest.

>>
>>390127086

You don't need to play anything.

The fun part about Trails is that they all take part in the same universe though.

Trails in the Sky takes place in the republic while Trails of Cold Steel take place in the Empire. Both exist on the same planet and reference each other heavily.

What that means is that you'll never feel left out if you haven't played one of the games, and no matter what order you play them in (as long as you know how to count) you won't have a problem.

Take that from someone who's never touched one of these games before Cold Steel released on PC.

>>390127632

>>
>>390127632
Romance is optional and it's just a small part in the game. They might flesh it out more in the sequel but don't take my words for it, I haven't play CS2. Still waiting for that port which I hope comes out on this December.

>>
>>390127632
Not him, but there really isn't much in terms of romance. You can tell that they're letting the characters fall in love sloooowly, like you can take you favored girl on a few romantic events but they don't kiss or confess their love or anything like that. By CS3 it'll have probably built up into a full-on orgy, but as it stands in CS1 the best you can do is usually being a close friend one of the girls has an eye for.

It's all optional too, so you can just bro-up like I did with Gaius, Machias and Eliot and fuck bitches.

So i just recently finished cold steel and i want to draw some comparisons to tits fc and sc here.

people always say that nothing happens in fc. i don't really agree with that. i mean i can see if you don't like the baddy of the week chapter approach with a bit of main story sprinkled in, but i never really minded because i thought that the individual chapters were just that enjoyable.

cold steel is kinda built in the same way, with a baddy of the field trip approach and then teeny bit of mainstroy sprinkled in. the problem i have with cold steel is just that the individual chapters are nowhere near as good as the ones in fc, which makes the 'nothing happening' REALLY standing out.

i also have problems with the way it ends. yes, fc also sets up the sequel but it has an actual ending, that ends the current situation surrounding the coup d' etat and all that jazz and then gives out all these revelatiosn to look forward in sc.

cold steel just kinda ends on a way more unsatisfactory note, with rean just getting carried away by valimar and nothing being resolved at all, just all this stuff thrown at you in the last 5 minutes.

cold steel also has the same problem that the early chapters of sc suffered from. you always knwo that in the end its gonna be a confrontation with the terrorists, there is nothing really surprising to look forward to, to shake things up during the chapters, kinda like in sc the early chapters are all going to be against the enforcers, which made it super boring and predictable

also i think fc's school chapter did the school aspect better than cs, which is focused entirely on it ...
>>
>>390128274
I disagree with most of your points but either way... You really should spoiler some of this shit.
>>
>>390128274
Cold Steel was meant to be one game. There's a lot of padding in CS2 (if you like interacting with characters then its not really a downside, but the plot does slam to a halt partway through) and it probably could have just be a singular game if Falcom didn't have to deal with technical limitations and deadlines.

Yes but it only fully blooms in CS2. All Trails games have romance.
Trails in the Sky has the best romance out of literally any videogame, not being able to pick who you end up with made writing the romance into the main plot work better in my opinion. From Trails of Zero onwards, the game lets you choose.

Yeah for a proper confession you'd have to wait for the second game. The confession scenes are really good too.
Also this game is separated into three arcs.
Sky/Liberl trilogy:
Trails in the Sky FC
Trails in the Sky SC
Trails in the Sky the 3rd
Crossbell arc (Zero is playable but has a better translation underway, Ao also is getting a fan translation):
Zero no Kiseki (Trails of Zero)
Ao no Kiseki (Trails of Azure)
Erebonia/Cold Steel arc:
Trails of Cold Steel
Trails of Cold Steel II
Trails of Cold Steel III (releases in 2 weeks)

Yes. FC, Zero and CS are all good starting points since they don't rely that much on the other games. CS II will be available on PC early next year and hopefully CS III will also be out next year.
Since Cold Steel III appears to be a turning point for the entire series, some characters from the other games will be a part of the main cast like Randy from Zero/Ao and Tita from Sky, so playing the other games is always recommended even if not necessary.
>>
>>390131262
CS2 is like the anti-FFXV

both games have you kind of on the run, but in one you have a harem, mad scientist, battleship, super robot, lesbian lolicon biker, and a high schooler princess lusting after you, and in the other you have a car, an endless swarm of paratroopers and mechs chasing you and live in a series of caravans

Question to you weebfags:

I bought one of the trails games and while I enjoyed the mechanics of it I couldn't stand the backtracking talking to people if you wanted to get the extra shit.

Its accepted that if you want to do 100% you need a guide.

So enjoy it at your leisure and go with a guide for a 2nd playthrough. If you want those extras so hard a 2nd playthrough with the speed button and skipped dialogue shouldn't be that much of a problem. If it does though, use the BP guide from the get go, will ruin some choices on quests on 1st playthrough but whatever right?

>The last boss fight might be the worst designed fight in JRPG history. It's not had in the "beat your ass because you deserved it" hard, but hard because the computer rolled poor dice.

There's no dice rolling in the next fights for fucks sake. Depending in your opponents stance you attack accordingly. If they are about to use a powerful attack you drop your counterattack defensive skill to negate it and probably do massive damage.

I'm on my NG+++ in nightmare and that fight has always been a breeze after the first time I learned how it works. Yeah he might use his powerful attacks a couple more times on occasion but then you just defend and counter accordingly.

In games like Pillars the battle speed is generally dictated by me. Turn based combat like Divinity OS are also really fun. But I tried trails FC and it was sooo clunky.

I am interested about the writing. My gold standards of writing are the works of Interplay,Black isle and Troika

How does Falcom compare to them? I never enjoyed the writing of any Japanese games, since they are generally raped by translators.(except maybe yoko taro).
>>
>>390139612
Falcom games generally play it really safe with the stories/originality, so don't expect anything completely mindblowing from a story-telling perspective. The mindblowing part is simply the amount of detail they put into every single aspect of the writing, to the point that one minor seven-word sentence in the prologue of the first game might finally big a major plot point of the eight game 13 years later.

Trails stories tend to be generic 90s anime stories, but shine from their unmatched detail.

The battle at the fortress is actually a hint of what's to come. It's probably going to be part of a long plot twist that finally comes to fruition in CSIII.

>>The game opens with a battle at a fortress. This entire concept is stupid as shit as you have a lot of arts, characters, skills and crafts available here. It's very overwhelming and paces the start poorly.
Interestingly, there's a really strong theory using information from previous games that suggests that the intro of the game where you storm Garrelia Fortress is canonically different from 60+ hours in when you storm Garrelia fortress. The prologue takes place in a different timeline from the rest of Cold Steel, including the chapter where you get to the fortress.

But do i get so choose my own romance?

Cold Steel makes me realise how much I miss text-only dialogue. When you're free from having to do voiceover for every itty bitty conversation in your game it really limits your options. The sound effect that plays as the text scrolls by reminds me of Harvest Moon.
