I don't think gender has anything to do with it. If you hand a controller to somebody who has never played a video game before and ask them to play, it will baffle them to oblivion. To a gamer, the task seems effortless because they developed the dexterity and muscle memory needed to operate a controller.

Games aren't intuitive.
They follow their own patterns and schemes that have over time become ingrained as rules of design.
Most people who play games don't remember how bad they were when they started.
A person with less experience doesn't know how to filter out the noise from the useful visual information, doesn't know how to quickly translate intention to action and a lot of other shit.
In short a novice is overwhelmed and can't do shit. I know because I didn't play games until I was older due to a tgameophobic mother and I was incredibly bad at games for a long time and remember what learning is like. Most people on /v/ have fuzzy memories at best of that time so they assume they always knew their way around games, but the truth is the patterns are burned into their brains through repetition.
Watching less experienced people play is torture, but it's everybody who plays games less than you, not just women, though it may be more common.

Women generally have longer reaction times and worse spatial reasoning skills than men, which puts them at a disadvantage that's multiplied by the fact that they usually don't get as autistic about vidya (or hobbies in general) as men do and spend less time playing and probably won't see "I want to get better at [game]" as a reason to play.

For example, if you have a game about swinging swords or other weapons at things, you'll often see women misjudge spacing and swing the sword at air multiple times in a row before they react to the fact that their hits aren't connecting, and while a man who's not proficient at the game might still miss he'll generally recognize more quickly that he's missing and correct for it.

I don't think they are. For a long time games were seen as a guy only hobby. People who are generally good at videogames and subconsciously recognize patterns to know what they're supposed to do usually started when they were young. Videogames are moving towards being seen as a more gender neutral hobby, but not quite. At the same time, grown women getting into it now are definitely not going to be good. For example, let's say this were your dad or uncle. It's not because they're old or male that games don't make sense to them, they just haven't ever played before. I've heard this called game sense and I think that's an apt term. It takes time to develop muscle memory of a controller, which translates better to other controllers one you have that. It takes time to recognize level design and patterns for exploration in games, because it isn't the same as in real life. I know a decent number of girls who are good at videogames, maybe even better than me, because they've developed gamesense. And i have male friends that barely play games at all and despite their intelligence anything that isnt normieshit like shooters or sports doesnt go well. Putting a controller in any hand that has no experience will get you similar results.

Twitch attention whores can still fuck off though. If theres any predisposition of females related to videogames, it's that they want to use something to get attention even if they have no real interest in it. Anyone white knighting them or any woman recieving reasonable criticism can fuck off too.

I think girls lack the trait to be good at something or beat something/someone just for the sake of it.

My flatmate was the stereotypical Chad. Athletic, good with girls, lots of friends etc.
He barely played video games and it sometimes hurt watching him because he was so bad but he kept trying until he managed to beat the level/mission/quest even if it took him way longer than it should have.
His gf on the other hand was ready to give up after two tries and only kept playing because we encouraged her to try again.

That being said I don't think girls are bad at video games per se. Maybe they can't stand up to their male counterparts on top levels but watching a few twitch streams shows that most people are shitters no matter the gender.

I think its because of the majority of girls don't have much experience when it comes to gaming or the like. Not saying that girls are terrible at playing games but it all comes down to experience or having the concept of games down.
This also applies to guys too if they don't have any idea about how games work.
