Playing as a ghoul is fine if they're not feral. A super mutant could possibly work too but they're generally not as accepted. Only thing is Bethesda would actually have to put effort into making it an RPG to accommodate them.

My personal disappointment aside, what am I missing with these games? I've tried multiple times with different titles (all except the OG). I really want to like them, but they just seem so.. soulless, empty. Like its just missing something. Do I just have shit taste?

Unpopular opinion here but I feel like Fallout 3 and 4 had some of the best and most interesting areas to go to and explore and were far superior to that of Fallout 1, 2, and NV. But you would expect that from Bethesda because, that's 'supposed' to be their bread and butter.

However, that being said; I don't think Fallout was supposed to be about interesting places and landscapes. At least, not for me. Don't get me wrong, I liked all the vertical shit in 4 and stuff like the 9th circle and the boat Harkness was on from 3 but Fallout's main focus is supposed to be about the many shads of gay that make up humanity and how post nuclear apocalypse has put that concept on steroids.

Bethesda just doesn't fucking know how to write realistic people. Almost every characters in their games is mostly good or mostly evil and the discussion you make are clear and obvious instead of ambiguous or leading to unintended consequences. That's not even how humans work in normal society let alone in a world where everything is completely fucked.

They should do whatever they want. it's their IP now.
