Been playing BOTW on Cemu this past week. This game is really fucking good, really. It's not a new formula, it doesn't innovate too much, but everything it does, it's the best I've seen of it. Exploration is really cool. Quests are usually fun and unique, the world feels alive and it's huge.

I honestly expected the game to be just decent, but it's actually really fucking good.

HZD opens very strong with the story but it quickly gets repetitive if you don't care about hunting dinos. I've not played BotW but Zelda games typically have a lot mechanics and puzzles besides the combat to keep it fresh.

I had a completely opposite experience. HZD was more enjoyable as the worlds opens up as you discover more machines, and tools.

My time with BoTW was more akin to your experience with the game starting strong, but you have all the tools almost immediately. Additionally, besides some mutations, you encounter most of the base mobs pretty early as well.

They are not dissimilar, but I think the comparison is just b/c of the release dates and console wars.
