Not really, the combat is this worst part of it and depending on the game there can be a lot of it, the platforming is okay once you get used to the controls, and exploring the levels is never rewarded well. Some parts are also fairly trial and error. Underworld is probably the best Tomb Raider.

This! Once you git gud, you know exactly what you are able and not able to do and it all comes down to the player to actually play the game correctly. Nothing about random pixels getting in your way, cutscenes interrupting gameplay, bosses that require different gameplay from the rest of the game.

1 and 2 were great, but the series starts to go downhill after the original staff left the team. With 3 and onward, Lara is basically just a marketing tool appearing in one soulless sequel after another. Last Revelation was a fair effort to take the series back to its roots, though.

The first Crystal Dynamics reboot was pretty good. Both Legends and Anniversary are some of the strongest games in the series. Underworld feels quite rushed, but I suppose it's a decent follow-up to Legends if you just want to see how it ties up some loose ends.

I didn't care for the second reboot at all.

The sound design does. The atmosphere is surprisingly good despite the blocky levels

personally i think anniversary is better if you want to get into the old games. i played them when they were new but the controls can still feel pretty clunky.

I'd say go for either TR4 (The Last Revelation) or TR3
General traversal takes some time getting used to. But once you get a hang of it, it's satisfying.
TR1-2 are quite archaic, Chronicles feels like an expansion pack to TR4 (so play that afterwards)
Angel of Darkness is NOT a good place to start.

If you don't get used to old ones, I HIGHLY recommend TR Anniversary. And all-round amazing remake, with many QoL improvements that newcomers would greatly appreciate.
I've only played decent amount of Legend and Underground, but they didn't held my attention for that long. It has it's fans though.

The classic Tomb Raider games get this atmospheric feeling of loneliness, mystery and exploration that I haven't experienced in any other game. And they did this from levels built of metre square grids.
