This is actually really out of date. Runes are going to be free in a few months, and until then they cost like 10 IP or something around there, and the IP you sink into them now will be refunded when the new runes release.

Also there's periodic crates that have either champions or skins in them, so you get an occasional boost to your champ pool.

The upcoming changes to the new player experience look fairly promising in relieving some (not all) of the grind.

Still, make no mistake, it will take you a long time to unlock ALL of the champions.

You can't have hard counters in LoL because it puts people without the certain champs at a severe disadvantage. The end result is that most champions are more or less the same. There's actually a whole subset of melee champions without gapclosers in League (Yorick, Morde, Nasus, Volibear, Trundle to name 5 off the top of my head). And I don't necessarily disagree with ghostcrawler on that sentiment. I think player skill should matter more than draft.

That isn't to say League doesn't have its share of flaws or that you're retarded for not liking it; in fact I'm not really all that interested in defending LoL. I just mostly wanted to point out to OP that a lot of the new player pains specifically are in the process of being addressed with some systems already released, so now is probably the least painful time to try it.

Because LoL's design makes it WAY too fucking easy to stay alive. Mobility skills everywhere, free wards, flash, lower overall burst and CC, etc. That's why you only see high kill counts in low-skill LoL games, that's what whoever said "braindead games" was referring to. Meanwhile Dota doesn't protect the player anywhere near as much, so even in high level play the game is a lot more explosive and unpredictable so there are higher kill counts.
