I recently got into CRPGs after playing Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics years ago,along with a few I can only barely remember. The genre is basically new to me again, so I picked up Pillars of Eternity and holy shit man it's so good. The leveling isn't unnecessarily complex, it looks GREAT with great atmosphere, and the weapons/spells/combat is way more fluid than I remember for CRPGs.
This is probably the only good thing /v/ has done to me.

They're fine. You can't really interact with them from what I've seen, but every now and then they make a comment or you can have a short conversation. You don't have to make your entire party at the start - you have a maximum party size of five, and you can pick up two party members )one a tank) right in the starter area, so I just made a pair of cute girls to follow my PC around.

The advantage of found npcs compared to the ones you create seems to be that they get bonus stats/skill points for the level you find them at. I've found a few in the world who would join me for a quest, or because I persuaded them, or if I hired them but the interesting thing is that some of the NPCs will leave you when their task is done, while the created ones never will. So you have the option to recruit them normally, or you can choose to bind their souls to yours, which makes them hate you but ensures they can't leave.
It's a pretty interesting system.

Isometric RPGs look stiff. If you're going to do that sort of bird's eye view look how Age of Decadence did it aka NWN or make a hybrid (able to go into first person perspective). It's a trend that needn't came back.

Iso CRPGs should make more use of the strengths of the perspective, like higher situational awareness and group control, instead of using it just because.

I thought Hong Kong was on par with Dragonfall (not having played the Dragonfall Director's Cut edition), but the addition of a campaign after the main was really well made and tied everything up nicely.

The thing I hate about isometric RPGs is how fucking bad they are at teaching you the mechanics. It's either a shitty tutorial that lasts for too long or "go fuck yourself, and figure all of this on your own".

It's hilarious the way many thing IE RPGs are somehow the baseline and they become blueprints for RPGs ever since when there's an entire SSI generation of RPGs prior to them that should be looked at as well.

Not really.
I got into gaming late because my mother was anti-gaming.
Besides Diablo II I had no expose to the genre and when I tried pillers of eternity I didn't like the entire squad thing mechanically.
I've since given up on trying more of it.
