Problem is games like that are the exception instead of the rule. Most modern 2D games go for 'retro graphics' as if taking steps back to the art design from 20 years ago is a good thing. It's fucking lazy and annoying.

Hollow Knight's art style is really nice, but unfortunately I wouldn't say it's representative of "modern 2d games". Most of them look like shit.
