Closest I've found for gameplay that makes you feel like an unstoppable engine of destruction coupled with a story that takes some work to make sense of it and some grindan action is Prototype. Don't get 2, it's for weenies and shits on 1's story.
Don't really know of anything remotely similar in terms of setting (hyper cyberpunk?) and other grindan games I know of don't give that same feeling of godhood when the grind is over.

Of courshe it has single player, that's really where you should go for a first playthrough, both to take the story and gameplay in at your own pace and to build your nigga so you can try and keep up in MP.
There's repeatable missions that you can do in both SP and MP where everyone works to get objectives done in exchange for bounty brouzouf at the end, which can range from 10k+ for simple missions to 60k+ on Minos to 0 because the server hates you with a passion. That's the closet it gets to warfarm as far as multiple people getting similar rewards without putting in the same amount of effort goes.

Anything you can do in SP you can do in MP, but now you have a couple assholes bouncing up and down on NPCs that you need to talk to in order to progress though you can fix the vast majority of problems caused by these by either starting a coop mission if you're in the temple HQ or using some speedrunning strategies

If there's any advice I can give you without just pointing you to the guides, it's to not worry about your dude's stats n shit. All you need are the requirements for weapons and things at temple HQ. Your fatal wounds (stat penalties) are cured through late game researches, and you'll probably wind up with the Gray Master (read: master of all trades) regardless of how you distribute points.
also you can load ammo into your inventory faster by clicking the ammo icon, then the squares in your inventory instead of clicking and dragging each magazine into it
