Sonic. What does Shadow fight for? Sonic's got friends, he's got a world he has a stack in. Shadow's so aloof and above it all, why should I care about him when he seemingly doesn't care about anything.

Controversial answer. Shadow has more potential as a character. Sonic is forced to be a 2cool4school type of character, while Archie has shown that Shadow can at least be a fun foil.

Shadow just needs to stick with a character. Is he going to be an edgelord forever or is he going to move on to other things? I guess that's why Sonic is always the main character because he's always just going to be 2kool4u. Ever since Shadow resolved that thing with Maria and the aliens he doesn't really have anything to do anymore. Except fuck Rouge I guess.

Shadow is literally the apex of character design. He is the perfect fictional character and THE ideal character design.

Story wise, he has the most fleshed out background of any character in the franchise. A benevolent person watching over the people of the Ark even though he was created for evil and political gain. Experiencing the trauma of losing someone close to you, carrying on their will, and finding out your true purpose in the world alongside the ones who truly care about you. Shadow is literally the poster boy for "how to create the definitive fictional character".

Even as a rival, he absolutely destroys the character category. He starts off thinking he has no time for games and can't be bothered with Sonic but then over time quickly realizes he isn't as "ultimate" as he originally thought and there is someone else in the world that can stand up to him and even go beyond and surpass him. And instead of bending over and getting done in the asshole like most rival characters, or stay in denial thinking there is no way he isn't superior, he accepts that in order to be "ultimate", he has to prove it to not just the world, but to himself, and he takes advantage of Sonic's equal status and uses it to help himself go further beyond.

Redemption wise, Shadow is like no other, where he completes his life mission via kamikaze, but when given a second chance he takes it upon himself to continue the will of his fallen family and make the world a better place as he sees fit, helping and getting help from his new comrades along the ay.

With a design that just gives off the coolness of his character, the ring inhibitors that portray the massive strength and power he holds, the well kept tuft of hair on his chest that shows his maturity and older but sage-like age. and the hover skates with torn paint to convey his long, rough, but progressive journeys and missions. You can just tell he has been through some shit.

Shadow of course. Better design and better character, his own game notwithstanding. He has cooler and more interesting friends than Sonic too.

Debatable. His design works, but it clearly gives off his infamous edgy vibe with all the red and black and the perpetual scowl.

And if you're gonna give Shadow Rogue and Gamma, then Sonic gets literally everyone else. And I'd argue Knuckles, Tails, and Blaze are pretty solid characters. Silver and Amy are ok too.
