How convenient for this thread to show up.

Long story short, I'm five hours in and very bored of this title. The story and setting are the only interesting parts to me, the gameplay is just completely bland and uninteresting.

Is it worth trying to continue or should I just give up now?

>>
>>390009750
Gameplay doesn't change that much later on, so if it bothers you really bad, you won't enjoy the rest of the game if you force yourself for the story

I liked the story. At the beginning, it's the "humanity trascends flesh" kind of stuff, but later on, it changes without noticing
>>
>>390009750
Everyone will admit the gameplay is only passable. It's just dumbed down rehashed Platinum mechanics.

If liking the story and music alone isn't enough to carry it for you then you might as well stop. The gameplay does not get any better. This game is one step off from being a walking simulator but even if it were a walking simulator it would still be a fucking incredible story with incredible music.
>>
>>390009750
As someone who played this as a platinum game, no I can't say you should continue. The opera boss is the only amazing one in the game. The only decent payoff is after you complete all 3 characters, watching 9s go nuclear was kind of neat. Still through the whole game it never feels like the bosses or enemies change.

Play it only for the OST, and some quirky out there Japanese writing. If for gameplay, you're better off replaying bayo, rising, or really anything else.
>>
>>390009750
I think it's a game that takes a while for things to pick up, but has a final stretch that changes everything in a way that makes up for it.

So I guess it depends on whether or not you think story will be enough to keep your interest.

Maybe it's just because I have more experience with Yoko Taro games than I do with Platinum games, but compared to something like the Drakengard series Automata's gameplay was incredible.

>>
>>390010307
It has the best yoko gameplay, but the worst of platinums big hitters.

Really if a sequel is made with plat, I would want a much more drastic approach to gameplay, levels, and bosses. Platinum games are known for their godly bosses, yet this has maybe 1 god tier, and a couple okay.
>>
>>390010307
Nobody compares games solely to Yoko Taro's games. If they did that then any game would be incredible by that standard.

When held up to games in general or especially to Platinum's history of games, the gameplay in Nier Automata is completely bland and nothing we haven't seen before nor does it expertly combine familiar mechanics to something that is memorable. Anybody who has played a Zelda, Bayonetta, MMORPG, God of War, or recent Final Fantasy will understandably not be particularly impressed with what Nier Automata is in the gameplay department. But likewise people who played those games will be floored by the artistic elements in the game.

I just beat ending E last night. Compared to Drakengard 3, this had nicer gameplay but a weaker story.

Maybe it's because I didn't 100% the game, but I would have liked a more plot threads explained. The red machine twins at the end felt a bit shoehorned in. Why couldn't they just reuse Adam and Eve as the machine overlords in the tower?
>>
>>390010886
Aren't the Red girls at higher level than Corean boys?
>>
>>390011082
The Red Girl(s) are a super-machine entity that exists as a consciousness for the entirety of their race. Like a god, but not a God. Vastly more powerful and intelligent than anything else. Adam and Eve are nothing in terms of power or raw thought compared to it.

Really? I thought D3 was easily Taro's weakest story.

Though I guess that's due in part to it being more of a dark comedy, where the humor really didn't do anything for me.
>>
>>390011325
If anything I'm kind of tired of the constant need he has for introducing stupid failtastic mini-games right before the last endings.
Then it becomes all about how difficult it was rather then the ending it unlocks.
The song ribbon fight in 1 was enough, but then he _had_ to bring it back for three then we got the bullet hell for NA.
>>
>>390011310
>Resident Evil Red Queen out of fucking nowhere
This I agree with, the machine consciousness desperately needed more backstory or something
>>390011310
>no explanation for how the albino twinks got spooged out of a clanker orgyball
The "machines" are actually pretty organic. They can evolve, this is explained to you by Adam and Eve in the alien chamber. The machines wanted to be human, and so they birthed something that was as close to human as they could get. The spooge ball was probably just a visual metaphor.
>didn't get why Yorha was getting wasted to "maintain the facade" if everyone to whom the facade needed to be maintained was now dead
Not everyone is dead and even androids who are alive now that weren't when humans were around still believe that they're fighting for them. That is literally the entire point of their existence, the reveal that what they've been fighting and dying for for several thousand years was dead before the war even started would be catastrophic
>didn't get why Robot Aunt (Uncle)'s village got fucked up
Machine Consciousness probably fucking with them since they're attached to the network and It runs the network. It doesn't appear to like it's lesser brethren considering that every friendly robot you met before turns into a weird zombie robot. Yes, Pascal's village wasn't attached when you met them, but the machine consciousness is like a god, it could easily have reattached them just to torture them.

Some things are more obtuse than others.

>Resident Evil Red Queen out of fucking nowhere
N2 is basically the embodiment of the machine network. Always in the background of things, but not seen until the end.

>no explanation for how the albino twinks got spooged out of a clanker orgyball
Adam was basically the apex of the machine's evolution. The machines essentially melded together to become a mini-factory/womb to create something that could potentially stand up to the androids. Because "This cannot continue."

>if everyone to whom the facade needed to be maintained was now dead
There were lots of non-Yorha androids left in the resistance. Yorha is basically a small special ops group compared to the resistance as a whole. Though we only really see Anenome's people.

>didn't get why Robot Aunt (Uncle)'s village got fucked up
I think the twins and towers spreading the logic virus are the main ones to blame.

Though I don't recall if it's explained if they targeted Pascal's people specifically because he was helping the androids or not.

>no idea about that one
>there are other androids besides YoRHa, since androids were made to serve humans, having it become common knowledge that they were extinct would've devastated morale and leave many androids in a deep state of depression over losing what is their reason for existence. The reason YoRHa is destroyed is to make sure the information on the truth is never leaked out, as many were on the verge of figuring out the reality
>this part is easily missable, but in the library there's a log that states that Pascal's Village and other machines that have been disconnected from the network were never disconnected at all, just given a sense of free will to see how they would react. What happened to his village was the Network essentially experimenting, seeing what would happen to a pacifist like Pascal would do under extreme diress

I don't blame you, you have to be pretty observant to piece together what's really going on. I think I dicked around in chapter select at the story important areas for a while before I got a good grasp on the story.

I don't recall them being pre-programmed to pursue a specific disposition, but there was something about certain machines discovering and pursuing specific aspects of humanity.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x779RLK0GXM

Like how the opera singer pursued beauty and love.
>>
>>390015208
That does not describe programming. It is the robots individual emotional growth that makes them treasure these things. One of the big parts of the game with regards to the machines is that they evolve and grow independent of their basic programming. Pascal truly felt that closeness with the villages organically, not because he was programmed to. It's the same way the opera boss became obsessed with becoming beautiful; not because she was programmed to do so, but that her obsession with another machine drove her insane to impress him.

No.
When 9S is trapped in the network he explains that the machines are given specific tasks by the network which they do exactly the same every time, and yet when they fail they learn nothing but repeat the same task as if failure WAS the point.
The machine "treasures" were infact the code packets with each specific task assignment.
>>
>>390015728
I took that as to mean that the basic machines were limited in their ability to grow. Like there was only a finite amount they could actually understand about the way they felt and that they were too simple to really become "human".

The treasures were symbolic of individuality, or the soul. Not a code of how to pursue existence apart from the network. That's the whole point of being disconnected in the first place. The repeated task ones that 9S talks about ARE connected to the network. Otherwise, he wouldn't be able to have seen their data.

>Not leaving Pascal with memory intact to let him learn from his mistake and try anew
It's tough love, but also a lesson he must learn if he's to ever strive for success in his desires for a robot village. That he'd be angry with me for denying his request after dropping the responsibility for his own life on to me shows that he deserves and needs that suffering for a chance at a happy future.

Welp, shows that my decision wasn't quite leading to the path I had hoped for. That was as far as 'Pascal' would go in a sense, so killing him or erasing his memories, while a disgusting duty to have thrust upon oneself, would be a better choice in the end.

Yeah, this. I think they tried really hard to make the battle system in NieR: A Tomato much closer to the battle system in NieR. And I don't know if the limitations in the gameplay are just the outcome of trying to recreate that NieR feel without straying too far into generic Platinum gameplay. Like the only part of NieR's gameplay they didn't translate over was the 2 hour long text adventure segment.

Yeah but those were just really long text logs, you were expected to read and make some choices in Popola and Devola's logs but they were ultimately meaningless choices. In NieR you were presented with a wall of text and if you mashed through and missed any important details you'd have to do it all from the beginning.

Hello, my name is Adam.

I’m a 27 year old human (01101000 01110101 01101101 01100001 01101110 for you rustbuckets). I practice martial arts with my hands and fists, and spend my days perfecting my art and reading superior human literature. (The Bible)

I train with my cube every day, this superior weapon can cut clean through androids because it is composed of crystalline silicon and carbon, and is vastly superior to any other weapon on earth. I was born two days ago, and I have been getting better every day.

I speak Human fluently, both English and the Japanese dialect, and I write fluently as well. I know everything about human history and their bushido code, which I follow 100%

When I get my human visa, I am moving to the Moon to learn more about their magnificent culture.

I own several ties, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to the Moon, so I can fit in easier. I eat fruit and speak Human as often as I can, but rarely does my brother manage to respond.

Wish me luck in on the Moon!

Can Androids reproduce?

It's clear that The Bunker seemed to have the equipment to make lots of Androids but do the Androids on Earth have the right infrastructure for it?
>>
>>390020896
I like to think there was a qt 3.14 female Yorha out of sight he took as his wife and the scanner is his "son" with whom he played catch and went fishing.
>>
>>390021736
No. Androids do not have souls, and despite the fact that they bleed, their interiors are all mechanical. The Yorha units are different, and more closely resemble Machines in consciousness and power source. But neither of them can make children. I think Machines like Adam may have evolved the ability to do so eventually though.
>>
>>390021943

The entire main cast of YoRHa androids is only a couple of years old. Only Anemone and Dev/Pop are older. And yeah, there's production factories somewhere that make the spare bodies and new models, I think 21O mentions how if 9S keeps on performing well there'll be more 9S models around.

Virtually every Resistance android is older than the Yorha troops we encounter. Yorha and Resistance androids aren't the same; Resistance androids are just bionic people, while Yorha are android bodies with repurposed machine lifeform cores driving them because their creators didn't believe it would be "ethical" to give them the same parts as other androids, given Yorha's disposable nature.

So in Nier, it is revealed that there were humans that were able to reunite their Gestalt and Replicant and become true humans again. What happened to them? Is just just a glaring plot hole that isn't brought up?
>>
>>390023942
The answer is "yes". The androids, resistance and yorha, and the machine lifeforms all feel the same emotions and philosophical musings. Resistance don't question it because they're "originals" and they're just people as far as they're concerned. Yorha are seen as warmachines by the resistance, monsters by the machine lifeforms and spend their lives following orders that instruct them to bury their human aspects so they can better serve their purpose despite this doing nothing to prevent them from actually feeling, and the machine lifeforms are exploring every aspect of what it means to be "alive" to its fullest. Who is more human here? All of them and none of them in equal measure, really. It's all equally human and inhuman, good and bad.
>>
>>390024623
This only worked on a few pairs, not enough to save the population. Without the Shadowlord keeping the Gestalts stable, they would relapse and die off, which kills off the respective Replicant.
