People on GOG are saying that 1503 has the best AI. Is this correct?
If possible, I'd like the AI to actually pose a challenge so it's not just me building a dream city without having to worry about anything besides that

1404 and 2070 are almost universally agreed upon as the best games in the series, 2070 is a reskin of 1404 with some minor gameplay changes to fit the era so just play whichever setting you prefer. And stay the fuck away from 2205.

2070 is not a "reskin" of 1404. The two games have different themes entirely. 2070 is about solving world crises brought about by technological advancement. 1404 is about expanding in the new world.

No. 2070 has ecology, arks, pollution, undersea, energy, multiple factions, and all the combat is naval. Saying that an Anno game plays like an Anno game is silly. All seven games "play the same".

They first made Anno 1602, then they looked for a way to name the sequel in a way people could realize its a sequel. They went for 1503, since it would sum up to 9 just like the first one, and Germans are autistic like that.
The overall market for these games is also autistic, see the attention the naming scheme gets, so it can't be dropped anymore
