They certainly do perform very well, but games made for DirectX (which is almost all of them past the year 2002) aren't usually optimized at all for OpenGL, which is what OSX uses.
If you really want to play games on a Mac, you really should install Windows on it. It's not hard at all to do, but I guess it's too much for Mac users that want everything to "just work"

Honestly, if I had to buy a new laptop now, I wouldn't go for an apple. But at the time (3ish years ago) the price wasn't so unreasonable (more like 700, which wasn't crazy for a laptop of that spec) and its lasted me better than other computers I've owned. Its just a shame they've jumped the shark since.
