You're the first anon I've ever seen have that opinion. Only like 3 pokemon were hurt by it and every other one was helped. Not only that, but it introduced new niches and ways to play the game. The physical/special split is hands down the greatest thing the series ever did. Diamond and Pearl were some of the worst pokemon games, but the sheer fact that they introduced the split is what made them great. Playing the older games is so hard for me because of the physical/special split.

Skarmory is only weak to Fire and Electric which used to scale only off special attack and resisted Bug, Flying Normal, Steel, Ghost(at the time), was immune to Poison and Ground and took neutral damage from Rock and Fighting while having astounding physical bulk, so you could very easily stick it in your team to wall most of the opponent's physical attackers while setting up entry hazards and whenever a special attacker came in you'd switch into Blissey or Snorlax and wall them easily.
With the split moves like Thunder Punch and Flare Blitz became a thing physical attackers could use to break past Skarmory so it wasn't a perfect wall for any physical attacker anymore.
