Growlanser 4, one moment you're having fun adventures in the military academy the next you're sent to the motherfucking concentration camp, and all the npcs you interacted with during the regular section slowly start dying from malnutrition and human experimentation, they even smack you with a scene of the two lovebirds from before comforting each other with sweet promises, and when he finally kicks the buckets, it's up to you to repeat back what they'd promised each other, or the girl dies of depression realizing her lover has really kicked it, and somebody's just pretending on the other side if you fuck it up

The game has a lot of other good moments, but damn that was the one that hit me the most

I was not expecting Mother 3 to end with a "purge the world that was ruined by selfishness and greed" and basically causing Armageddon to wipe it out, so that a clean and purified world was born. That is some bible stuff right there.

It has a couple of weak bits, but I honestly have to call the game my favorite RPG of all if only because of how nuanced almost all the villains and antagonists are and how much thought they put into their actions, Ludwig's a fucking douche, but he is a competent douche you respect while hating him
