I remember trying to play this game, I think I got to some giant greenish butterfly demon and just dropped it altogether after I beat him.

Coming from action games like DMC, Bayonetta, and Ninja Gaiden, the Dark Souls series is garbage. The first one has janky as fuck 4-way rolls, the second one has awful slow and unresponsive combat, and the third one with it's anime knights that spin like ballerinas unceasingly.

Every one of my friends tries to get me to play through these shit games, like I'm missing out on the experiences of a lifetime, and the only one I got all the way through was the second one, and that's only because it was a gift, and I was guilted into playing it. These games have the absolute worst controls any kind of combat centered game could have. You have to unlearn so much muscle memory to deal with their horrible input lag, that input queue, the lack of directional responsiveness, the horrible hitboxes, claustrophobic FoV, horrendous camera, and the useless lock on.

The best part is when you do anything outside of the fanbase's little paradigm for playing the games their way they throw a fit. Like using a shield in DaS1 garnered me nothing but bitching from friends, despite the fact that the rolls were so fucking bad. Or using a bow to get through places like that area with the mages that shoot homing magic at you in 2. Or parrying and backstabbing bosses in Dark Souls 3 to reveal how pointlessly easy they are.

This series is massively flawed at a fundamental level, because the only thing that makes them hard is how bad they are. Once you realize how to game the garbage AI, the weightless movements that allow backstab spamming, or the absurd number of frames on your roll, the game's "Difficulty" falls apart completely and doesn't stand up to scrutiny. This is a series that likely got popular because kids at the schoolyard made it popular by bragging about it, not because they're high quality, challenging, titles.

As a fan of /tg/-related stuff, I unironically like lore of the game and think that little bits and pieces of story are actually rather decent. Plus it has great atmosphere, art-direction and soundtrack.
~~Though I don't really like gameplay itself.~~
