Sure standards have fallen like a brick in water, but that's not the underlying problem here. The world is too effective. Everything needs to happen right now, and everyone need to be working as optimally as possible with as little downtime as one can manage.

Modding is just like everything else. It only exists now so that people can add to their own value by adding a few dollars to their bank-account. Because that's all that matters.

There was a profit model in modding even in the days of Morrowind and Half-Life. It was just much more roundabout than what Bethesda's doing, and in the long run it was good for the industry. Modders would make mods that showed off dev skills, devs would get in touch, modders get industry jobs, and a new source of quality talent opens up. Modders are basically ideas guys who are worth something because they have at least a working grasp of what it takes to make their ideas happen, and can possibly work toward it directly in some capacity. At their best they're basically equivalent to VCR generation directors who figure out how to make a movie by watching lots of movies and seeing it all done.

modding for fnv is hard. Almost got an amour to work but fucked something up early on. The amount of work for even one is insane. And making textures makes me want to die over how retarded it is.

Also even getting collusion to work is stupid, all I can find is shit about copy and pasting it from a vanilla object in nifscope.

I wasn't defending what Bethesda has done. Far from it. I see earlier modding setups as an investment in the future - it made it possible for new talent to get discovered and for that talent to build an impressive portfolio while also extending the sales viability of a game from weeks or months into years. Bethesda are trying to 'cash in' in the short term and they've done it in such a way as will not only destroy the short-term goodwill that they'll need when their next half-finished bugfest slithers out of a sewer grate and into the nearest Wal-Mart but they're also destroying the sandbox that organically cultivated tomorrow's visionaries. They can denominate what they're getting out of mods today in dollars but they can't even begin to calculate what they're potentially burning up in the process.
