It feels like the only viable way to move in combat is to block dodge. It takes so long to disengage from your enemy, and start running that three guys have already attacked you, not to mention how slowly ryu turns while moving. Reminds me alot of w3 in that sense.

How to turn Ryu:
1. Stop
2. Turn
3. Start moving in new direction

To stop instantly you can opt to press guard. In fact any action -- jumping, slashing cancels movement animations.

You can jump from side to side and back and forth very fast because of this. In fact it is required to dodge-jump, dodge-jump to avoid projectile attack that home in on you.

being defensive is really important in ng, but the game does give you some moves to cheese until you get good.
