How do you feel about this most likely winning GOTY 2017?
>>
Fine, it's the best game of its genre ever made.
>>
I'd be fine with it but I doubt it'll happen as afaik only western games have ever won. Also, keep in mind the VGA's (or whatever they're called nowadays) aren't official by any capacity, they don't particularly mean anything and aren't the only people handing out GOTY awards to things.
>>
>>389882316
Based on the way gaming outlets were/are sucking this game's dick while slipping a finger into that mud-hole, this will win GOTY and runner-ups will either be Persona 5 or Horizon Zero Dawn.
>>
Wouldn't be my pick, but I'm fine with it. As far as innovation goes, it beats out the other potential contenders.
>>
>>389882316
I'll be a little sad, since I don't think it's really deserving of it. I think its a good game, don't get me wrong, but knowing it's gonna shaft Automata makes me a little sad.
>>
ANGRY AS FUCK!
>>
>>389882316
Amazing game, probably the best game ive played this decade.
>>
>>389882316
It's the best game of all time so it's well deserved. GOTY are usually shit games though.

>>389882316
I feel like that would be pretty indicative of how harmful journalism's style of
>pick up a game
>play it for a few days
>dispose of it and move on to the next
harms their ability to actually really appreciate games. I loved BOTW but I couldn't make it my GOTY. Everything feels shallow and nothing quite feels truly realised. I've replayed every other zelda game to death but I have no drive to 100% this one after completing it, let alone replay it. I'd really love them to go back and make a more realised game using the groundwork they created here, I'd even be okay with them reusing assets like majoras mask. I'd love something in between a traditional zelda and BOTW. They threw at least half the baby out with the bathwater but it's being praised for making changes for changes sake. Zelda needed to change it's formula but to say that it needed to toss everything is silly and understates how truly lazy they got with the items and dungeons.
>>
>>389882316
I can't fucking wait. Between BotW winning every major award this year, Mario Odyssey getting rave reviews and the Switch crushing this Christmas, it's going tonbe shitpost mayhem on here.
>>
>>389882497
Yeah you're right, it might actually be a bit better than Skyrim.

Not when Dusk, sonic mania, AM2R and Hollow Knight exist.
It's a good game, but there are older games that already did what BoTW tried to accompish.
All the bugs I encountered on the switch version already have me wondering how some of the regions got past play testing.

You just can't explain it to them, anon. They don't see how BOTW has little to no hand holding, but still teaches the player how to play it in a simple way. How it has so many great areas, it naturally pushes you to explore them.

BOTW is by no means perfect, but the fact so many non-Nintendo devs came out and said they have a shit ton to learn from this game speaks for itself.

BotW suffers from of the issues which plague all open world games - enemy variety and difficulty balancing for example.

But these are minor inevitable nitpicks which never come anywhere close to overshadowing the game.

It's like driving a Ferrari and complaining about the stereo. Well fuck me, the whole car is ruined!
>>
I don't know about you guys but to me the paragliding was such a crucial and fantastically enjoyable mechanic that I now feel every open world game that doesn't let me majestically glide from point A to point B is lacking.
>>
I never take official "GOTY" shit seriously because its always about who can appeal to the biggest audience.

Of course Skyrim meets Portal with iconic Nintendo name attached on is going to win.

That description doesn't at all mean its a bad game, but obviously its going to fucking win.

Personally I think that while BotW is the most innovative game of the year, NieR Automata is the "best" in that its a complete and total package with no weak areas. Even if other games have done aspects better, NieR is the strongest collectively across the board overall.

I'm not even kidding when I say this but BotW has actually ruined playing some other games for me. I've seen myself throwing my game character at a cliff-face before realising I can't climb it, or being up somewhere high and wishing I could just jump off and soar away.

BotW didn't just free the player from the shackles of archiac open world design, it actually made navigating the landscape fun and engaging.
>>
>>389894902
The entry level philosophy lesson was pretty weak. "What does it mean to be alive, and does life have any inherent value?" is eh.

I hope developers start learning how to make restrictions on player freedom feel less jarring.

Ironic as fuck considering the overall blandness of BOTW's world, and no, pretty colors do not a breathing world make.

>pretty colors do not a breathing world make.
It's a good thing the level of world building sophistication in BotW is on a different planet to every other open world game.
>>
>>389895970
They are seriously no different from each other. They're both games that have well designed and good looking worlds that are filled up with repetitive tasks and endless traveling that make people go "duhhh... the world is empty."
>>
>>389893960
I understand that stuff, and it truly is a superb achievement in that regard, but that's simply not good enough to make up for the other downsides.
>>
>>389896058
Yeah, it's cool that you can catch a fish like that, I agree. BOTW has a ton of cool little things like that, but that's all they are. Cool LITTLE things. Even if you have a hundred awesome little things to find like BOTW does, eventually it's gonna get old and stale, like BOTW started getting after about 12 hours. A bunch of awesome little things like that isn't enough to carry a game.
>>
>>389898663
Not him but it's not about the fact you can catch a fish like that. It's about how the entire foundation of the game is built on player agency and environmental interactivity. The numerous intertwined systems create sense of immersion I've rarely felt in a game. There's some truly next-level stuff going on in BotW.
>>
If BOTW wins GOTY then gaming as we know it has reached the lowest of lows. I'd rather Mario odyssey win if anything.
>>
So I've been playing Master Mode with level 1 clothing

Does max level clothing remove the threat of mobs like it does in regular mode? I enjoy having to do nearly every encounter stealthily because I die in (1+fairies) hits regardless of hearty meals
>>
>>389895270
Red Dead Redemption is great, but I only did the missions since that's the only fun part of the game. If you explore in the wild and find some ruins, you aren't rewarded with a fun mission unless you selected it beforehand. In BotW I can just find shrines and puzzles and do them as I please, the game is paced entirely around exploration.
>>
>>389895013
I know that feel. it's weird because when I saw it on video I was like "wtf you can climb anything? that's stupid" but then when you play it, it just feels right.

honestly botw broke some sort of wall imo and showed game design still has a ton of potential untapped
>>
>>389899849
I get it, and again, I do think that it is really awesome, but I just don't think it's enough to carry the entire game. That stuff is fantastic, but you need more stuff on top of that to make a truly great game. I don't think the game is bad by any means, in fact I liked it a lot, but I don't think it's deserving of the insane praise it's getting.
>>
>>389882316
Nothing, because game show awards are totally worthless just like the Oscars and are either bought or given out for political reasons

What functioning adult gives a shit about award shows
>>
>>389900304
Wow anon, it's like you agree with the majority of people that actually played the game. The games good but it's not 10/10 good.
>>
>>389900304
>>389899849
Something that I think adds to this point: You can catch a fish like this and it's next level and driven by player agency and that's great. You can even throw bait in the water and grab one or shoot a lightning arrow in there. But there is no fishing rod.
>>
>>389882316
When was the last time a Nintendo game won GOTY? It'll probably go to some shit like Horizon.
>>
>>389894902
Except Witcher 3 was it's game of the year and Witcher 3 definitely has a limited audience.
>>

>>
>>389900304
not sure what praise you're hearing but all I've heard is that it's a great game and possibly the best zelda ,which I agree. now if someone said, "BEST GAME EVER SURPASSES ALL" I would have to disagree, but it's a pretty freaking fun game. it definitely has its flaws, but it really is a breath of fresh air

>>
>>389900806
Where have you been the last 6 months? All there was in the media was absolute praise. 10/10 mastahpiece game of the entire world. Redefined what video games are. Every other game is shit now.
That's literally how it went down. I played for 2 weeks straight on release and wasn't seeing what all this hype was about. I enjoyed the game but God dam did it get sucked off hard. Practically every one I knew who played the game thought it was good too but they also didn't get why everyone was giving it 10s and shit. Ask your normie friends if they played and agree with the 10/10 dick ride wave.
>>
>>389900138
Oh, and I am at golden enemies, if that matters
>>
>>389901043
first quote is a bit much, but yes I do think it's the best single player open world game in the genre. I've played a lot of open world games and I don't think it surpasses other open world games in -every- way, but overall, as a stand alone game (comparing the others without mods or dlc), it beats them yeah
>>
>>389900531
Yeah, and it really blew me away when I discovered all that stuff, but there's only so much to discover. Once you play for a little while, you're gonna stop finding new mechanics, and the wow factor will wear off. At this point, the game needs other things to carry it, but it doesn't really do that, so it gets stale For me that happened at around 12 hours.
>>
>>389895421

literally more to do than in BotW

Also, "emtpiness" is not inherently a problem. It takes place in a desert, there SHOULD be some vase fields of granduer. It's like not absolutely every square inch needs to be packed with content, a world needs space to breathe for immersion. Better than putting a bunch of shrines and korok seeds all over the place

Besides, the ambient challenges like hunting and sharpshooting and treasure hunting made it worthwhile to explore all parts of the world
>>
>>389901268
The first quote is pretty commonly said. And don't you think calling it the greatest single player open world game constitutes "insane praise"?

The game gets stale once you realize how repetitive it is. Most don't notice it until they're like 50 hours into the game. You can spend tons of hours playing the game and not even notice. Meanwhile you barely did much during those play sessions. I'm surprised you caught it in only 12 hours. It took me around 30 or so.

>>
>>389901451
not really because the amount of detail they put into this open world is staggering. other games you get the sense they put some detail into some parts and then others just pasted a shit ton of assets randomly.

I'm not just saying it because stupid reviewer normies say so; when bioshock infinite came out I thought it was pretty bad and the praise it got pissed me off. but this zelda is objectively good (I'm not a nintendo fanboy either, I thought skyward sword was bland)
this is a legitimate 9/10 or 9.5/10 game.

There's always a cycle of obnoxious with this site these days.

If people like a game, they obnoxiously deride every other game, which makes people obnoxiously deride the game whenever it gets brought up, so now discussion is just pure sewage.

Why can't we like video games without shitting on other games?
>>
>>389902489
I still have no idea what you're talking about. The game does get stale after a while and then you just decide to go finish beasts/ go to hyrule castle. My total playtime was around 80 hours. Most of which was me looking for cool shit and secrets.
You make it sound like I didn't like the game. I just don't like people thinking the game is the pinnacle of all gaming. I guess people were too tired from playing mediocre shit for the past few years.
I also don't know why I went to college. I went for electrical engineering and I didn't even try much which reflected on my grades but I still graduated. I suppose it looks nice on my resume, I get a lot more call backs from different companies. Still not sure what to do with my life though, which is why I'm here talking about fucking video games.

im actually curious to know what you think is going on. what DO you think my argument is, and could you cite the posts this implications are made?

holy shit this. its like what if you took gta and replaced every car with a taxi. the entire "grand theft auto" aspect and made it as fucking plain as possible. that and "look in any direction oh g---o--d t-we----n-t-y fra------me-s a s-e----c-ooo-nd"

I had no idea we were arguing man.
Stop trying to argue with me, let's just talk about vidya.

Stop beating around the bush and be specific about what you want to say instead of using sarcastic greentext. I never said the game was bad in the first place, I literally just told you I liked it. All you had to do was explain what you meant.

There's not many good threads up so I stayed in this one.

out of everything you listed

thats the only valid complaint

This. BotW was amazing at first, but quickly declined and became tedious. I was feeling fatigue by the time I took on the first divine beast, then dropped the game altogether after beating the second. The only thing nice I can say about the game after all that is the world was beautiful and it made you want to explore. Unfortunately, exploration inevitably led to disappointment.

Slowly but surely the posters who agree that the game isn't as amazing as we've been led to believe are increasing....soon we may be able to actually discuss this game.
>>
>>389905710
The game can get a little tedious over time but if it happens to you before your first divine beast you're jaded as fuck. Don't kill yourself
>>
just because the movement is more complex does not inherently make it more fun. I honestly enjoy moving around in GTA moreso than in this game
>>
>>389899849
I agree that all of those little elements are neat, but to me, BotW completely botched the fundamental aspects of what makes a game fun. For example, combat isn't just tedious, repetitive, easy to cheese, contains very little variety, virtually no risk, and has meaningless rewards; it is completely worthless. You can go through the entire game without engaging a single enemy outside of bosses (or just Ganon if you don't do the divine beasts). The combat only perpetuates a cycle of breaking and acquiring weapons, and almost feels like an after thought that they added so the player has something more to do in the world.
Shrines were obviously split up into 120 self contained identical structures to, again, attempt to pad out the huge map. An easy, lazy way compared to integrating those elements seamlessly into the world as genuinely fleshed out, unique dungeons, and integrating the puzzles that would work straight into the map itself. They're also easy, have the same exact theme, and give you the same exact outcome each and every time.
Aside from Shrines, korok seeds are the only other thing you'll really be finding by exploring the world, and they get old fast. On top of that, the reward for collecting them isn't new abilities, or exciting items, its simply to expand your inventory, to overcome an artificial, and extremely dull limitation. Again, all just to have something to pad out the world.
Even the divine beasts and the lead up to them feels like you're going through a routine after you beat the first one.
Sidequests are almost entirely meaningless and are generally just comprised of fetch quests.

I could go on, but I'll stop with this; the most exciting part of BotW is the beginning.

the shrines are the worst idea of all time and I don't understand why more people don't totally criticize the game for it. They are absurdly awful, they totally break any immersion of the world. Such a fucking lazy way to design a world.

>Overly long post with opinions

Did you think this post made you look smart or something?
>>
>>389906530
I didn't immediately head out to do the divine beasts, so there was ample time for me to become jaded with what the world had to offer.
>>
it was pretty fun but i honestly hate the "relearn memories from 100 years ago" thing. it's like, gee...seems like it would have been more fun had I played during THAT time instead of the shitty world that was left behind. it's such a tease.
>>

It get what he is saying, I still haven't beat it but the game went in the right direction but needed to iron out some kinks such as the game getting easy as you progress, more/bigger dungeons, and the enemy ai being more aggressive (there really doesn't have to be an animation for when you steal an enemies weapon).
>>
>>389882316
I haven't seen anything unambiguously better yet, so fine I guess.
