Was he a good final boss for the series?
>>
>>389875760
Literally who?
>>
>>389875760
Yeah
>>
>>389875760
No he was a LITERALLY WHO and they didnt bother making him more than that.

The furtive pygmy himself might have been ok but they fucked over the pygmys lore in 3
>>
He was alright, nothing great tho.

I was hoping for a the furtive pygmy or even better The dragons to return and the age of ancients begins anew

But no.
>>
>>389876010
>they fucked over the pygmys lore in 3
I couldn't agree more.
>Introduced to the furtive pygmy in DaS intro
>Turns out there was a whole bunch of furtive pygmies in TRC
And I still think that the angels were kind of just thrown in without explanation.
>>
>>389875882
>>389876010
>Literally who?
But that's kind of the point of the boss fight?
Gael isn't Gwyn, the NK, Aldia or anyone important for that matter. He just another undead/human that has devoted himself to a mission.
Besides, your not fighting Gael after he gets back up. Your fighting the dark soul itself.
>>
>>389876635
>But that's kind of the point of the boss fight?

No.
>>
Orphan of Kos was a better fight
>>
>>389879247
too bad nobody played shameborne
>>
>>389875760
From the perspective of being a mirror of your character, yes. Gael is essentially another player character. He was an undead who went through thousands of years of journeying (the playerbase playing through 3 games) he leaves messages to help you (obviously mirroring players leaving messages for each other) and he was pursuing the same goal.

From the perspective of being the climactic final boss of the very last bit of Souls content ever? No. He didn't have enough setup. He just kind of happens, and it doesn't help that there were still a lot of unanswered questions after beating him. A lot of people were expecting something like the Serpents, or some other grand figure controlling the cycle of fire or some shit. No one was expecting the finale of the entire series to be an insane guy with a broken sword possessed by the Dark Soul.

So we've covered that he doesn't matter for shit.

>He just another undead/human that has devoted himself to a mission.

Like 90% of the characters already present in the game, hooray.

>Besides, your not fighting Gael after he gets back up. Your fighting the dark soul itself.

>le ebic personification vidyakino

So why was this literal last minute copy/paste of most NPCs in the series with none of the significance of being present earlier in the game (or the series) enough to make him a compelling character to you? Let alone as a boss, period? You realize he's practically interchangeable with any NPC in the game and they would have much more effect, right? Even though they don't fucking do anything?

And I don't want to hear the whole 'you just wanted him to be EPIC like every other boss' and 'he's meant to be nobody' shit. He could have been literally any NPC in the base game and have more effect, and most of them are actual nobodies, except for the fact you actually talk to them more than once have some semblance of understanding of their character being at least important to ashen one.
>>
>>389875760

He's alike the player characters of all the games. A no name undead with fucktons of determination & eventually does something big. Gael might as well have been the PC of his own game.

Theme-wise, I think it fits. You've slain all the gods, dragons, etc. You can see it as fighting the embodiment of the Dark Soul, alike how the SoC's the embodiment of the First Flame, & possibly topping all that. Or you can see it as the end of an age. The First Flame is fading, everything's dead or destroyed. There's hardly any higher purposes or grand battles, they're all over & gone. Just two nameless undead fighting either due to insanity or for self-defense in the middle of nowhere.

It's also a boss even more Guts than Artorias. Even the damn crossbow. The only way he can be more Guts is if he had an arm-cannon.

It's true though. Nothing after the first game was ever intended, the game just became popular and the publisher wanted more money and forced them to shit out sequels. Nothing in 2 or 3 was ever part of the plan.

It shouldn't have had an opening cutscene either.

The fog gate version of the fight honestly worked best, where Gael just makes a B-line towards you from over the horizon. Were it actually the player's first time entering the area, you'd ACTUALLY be fighting for your life and you'd have to remember during the barrage that it's Gael from the painted world.

You already know what Gael looks like, you already know he's there, and you already know the pygmy lords are dead or at the very least dying. So the initial cutscene was very redundant.

Dark Souls 3 needed MUCH more subtlety in a lot of moments like these.
>>
>>389875760
for the whole series? absolutely not. soul of cinder was a better final boss for the entire series, even if he was a gwyn copy for the second half.

gael was still a good and badass boss though
>>
>>389882415
The opening cutscene was just an excuse to have one last Artorias reference in there.
>>
>lorefags

Mechanically, he was great.
>>
>>389884719
lorewise he's a perfectly rounded character, equally as plausible as the unkindled one. The absolute zeros of the setting survive for a last battle where nothing really matters anymore, pretty fitting for a game about entropic decline.
>>
>>389880662
From only intended to make one Dark Souls game, after all
>>
>>389876635
If he only had some build up towards this, it would ve been more sufficent. It isnt that he is nobody that bothers me, its just he feels too random and irrelevant to anything.

They should've made the 3 DLCs to add more depth to this character to make him feel less of a random aspect to the story then it wouldve been fine.He could've went for another mission to acquire a pigment for the painting girl.

Orphan of Kos isn't good because he's hard, he is good because he lets you use everything you learned throughout the game and the DLC to its fullest potential.
>parrying
>backstabbing
>dodging
>camera control
>rallying
you need to be good at all these things in order to have a great fight against Orphan.
many Bloodborne bosses get either too easy when you parry, or cant be parried and thus rely on you playing a boring dodge and attack kinda game.
Orphan of Kos lets you use all your tools while still being hard.

Pottery. Personally I find the appeal of Gael to be the fact that he wasn't a big name like Gwyns Knights or the Lords of Cinder but just a foot solider that had managed to live from the near beginning of history to the end of it. He managed to outlive all of those big names in the end.

If there was buildup, yes. But there wasn't. He was a literal who introduced by the third game's DLC. Patches would have made more sense and has more impact, and even that would have been ridiculous. Maybe if there was another undead who lived through the years, or it was the Chosen Undead from the first game who became the Dark Lord it would have been amazing.

But in reality there was no reason to fight the Dark Soul. You were on its side the whole time. But, due to demand, they shoehorned it in.
>>
The fight was great. Also, having summoned him for multiple bossfights beforehand, I feel like there was sufficient build-up around him to justify him being the end boss. I was satisfied.

He was an alright fight, but no it was not. Soul of Cinder's 2nd phase was a more fitting end.

I hate how fucking everything in the DLC is just a giant damage sponge. There's a difference between difficulty and tedium, and all the boss fights are more an endurance test than a test of skill.
>>
>>389876264

I played the shit out of Dark Souls 3, really played it until I was just dead bored, a couple hundred hours logged, starting from day 1. I bought the DLC pack or whatever early, but never got around to playing until now. I'm someone who played bloodborne after every previous entry (just recently). Going back to DaS3 feels bad, and I liked it a lot at release. Bloodborne has kind of spoiled the souls franchise for me.

Not really enjoying this ashes of ariandel dlc so far, pretty boring. Just spoke to the Freide lady for the first time, traveled a little onto the ice lake and closed out in boredom. Are the dlcs considered good or bad?

He could have been in the base game as a fellow undead and occupied a role like Solaire/Lucatiel (fellow undead seeking a purpose, in his case trying to find the painted world)
It'd be so much better and hit far harder if you had time to get to like Gael having fought alongside him, and drive home Patches' "every age is beset by the greed of man" you turn on each other at the world's end
>>
lorewise maybe not but it was a very fun boss fight, definitely one of the best. i think it was an adequate last boss.
>>
>>389894383
Thematically Ringed City was really good, it was a lot like AotA and had a lot of shit that linked back to DS1. Its not fantastic & the wheels came off the lore a long time ago, so obviously it won't live up to what people expect as the last piece of souls content.

You guys are aware of the meta-narrative in the DaS3 DLC right?

>Friede is Namco, keeping Ariandel locked up and flogging himself to sustain the world
>Ariandel is Fromsoft, flagellating himself for blood to try and keep the Painted World Dark Souls alive
>Painter Girl is Miyazaki who wants to create new places but has been kept kind of locked up by Freide

Seriously. Then with TRC we have Patches and his whole "A FINE DARK SOULS TO YOU!" thing which is basically just Miyazaki speaking directly through him and mocking you. There's also that Locust who tells you not to expect to be able to understand everything.

The whole idea of painting rotting eventually is a commentary about games and franchises stagnating and becoming rotten.

Logarius, that fight is fucking intense. I just finished it again on my new character about five minutes ago. I'd say it's almost as fast paced as Orphan because no matter what range you're at he's a threat with constant magic barrages and once he enters his second phase he's even faster when he goes up in there as well as summoning the sword flurry thing which adds another element to the fight.

Ludwig is incredibly overrated in my opinion, I don't get why people like the fight outside of presentation and music. It's another flailing beast that can easily be staggered by just nonstop attacking him.

Didn't have much trouble with that guy. Funny how the opinions on the difficulty of BB bosses vary a lot. Different playstyles I guess.

I must admit reading anons here saying the DLC bosses were the hardest in the series made me go into each boss arena very nervous and that kind of created a mental barrier for me. Didn't have much trouble with any boss in the maingame but I lost the count to the amount of tries Laurence and Orphan took me. Honourable mention for Ludwig, but thankfully he's easier in 2nd phase.

member when in DAS1 you had a showdown with Gwyn for the FATE OF LIGHT AND DARK?! (when you were actually just the cleanup crew being bossed around by the jewsnakes)

member in DAS2 when you were straight-up told you either had to embrace this shitty, futile cycle, or reject it to try and break free, something the entire game repeatedly tells you is kind of hopeless?

member that boss fight where you fought a foe in the prime of their life, and in so doing demonstrated agency and that maybe this dreary world of light and dark isn't so hopeless after all? of fucking course not, because as DAS3 takes as one of its major themes, you're always a slave.

If you wanted an epic showdown with the Furtive Pygmy or something to finally lay claim to the Dark Soul and finally find some kind of silver bullet to its problems those being human fears, thoughts, ambitions and desires you're probably the same kind of person who's mad we never got to go to Carim, couldn't spare Sif, and otherwise totally missed the point of this franchise.

I never said he was hard just that it's a good fight, I find Bloodborne to be a very easy game because of how many vials your given and the rally system. Only bosses that took me 10+ tries were Ebrietas and Orphan.

Only redeeming factor of that fight, he also did the track for One Reborn which is a terrible fight saved by god tier OST as well.

Not his damn point. Point is he needed to be in the base game or at the very least mentioned.

playing through bloodborne again makes me realise more than anything just how much better the dlc is than the base game

for whatever reason, the game just seems to absolutely fall apart around the forbidden woods area in terms of overall enjoyment

some of the worst bosses are in this part, hemwick witches, rom, one reborn, celestial emissary, micolash and some surprisingly disappointing ones, amygdala, shadows, wet nurse.

The areas are kind of a let down as well, forbidden woods is way too long for how disappointingly short the far more interesting byrgenwerth area is, yahar'gul might be the most frustrating location in the game with the respawning, buffed enemies and the three hunter gank, frontier is okay, but suffers from poison pool level syndrome and the upper cathedral ward is way too short for such an excellent atmospheric approach. If it weren't for the winter lanterns, mensis would be perfect. Cainhurst is also pretty great.

It's genuinely hard to imagine Bloodborne without its DLC nowadays, the music, bosses and areas all seem to far outshine the rest of the game.

He's too patrician for plebeians to understand. He embodies the empty pointlessness of the series better than any other boss in any of the Soulsborne games. Not a surprise that /v/irgins are too dumb to get the point.
>>
>>389903287
anon kind of just did. the theme is your fatalistic role as a catalyst for renewing the cycle or your ultimately futile attempt to rebel against the foundations of the world.

the lack of catharsis was deliberate. it's meant to hammer home your absolute lack of control over the situation.

>>
>>389907797
I sure as fuck wasn't pleased with the "Go sit on a fucking chair" ending of DS2. DS1's endings were certainly more appealing, but you also have zero narrative control over that situation, either.

Yahar'gul was the real stinker for me. There is just nothing engaging about how that place is put together.

If they were going for 'subtelty' with Gael they really didn't hammer that home with the long intro cutscene and le ebic music number.

Soul of Cinder is not only better, but also still the definitive final boss of the series. No better way to close the book and put an end to the world than by battling the amalgamation of all Chosen Undead.

As for Gael, I didn't even realize that he was the final boss of the DLC at first. I was rather disappointed.
