It's like a detective game where you walk around investigating for clues and leads on your father's murderer and you get in fights occasionally then it turns into a full blown fighting game using the Virtual Fighter engine.

It's full of other random shit to do like going to the arcade and collecting figurines and stuff but mostly traveling the town's talking to people and beating people up

The fights aren't that frequent. There's a day night cycle. You have to go home and to bed by bed time each day. There's a puzzle sequence I would have like a but more of. But what makes it special is the daily routine. You need to get up go to the bust and work at the ware house to save money to buy a ticket to china. Very comfy.

Different games but:
Shenmue has better graphics and gameplay
Yakuza has more content
Story - depends on your taste, I really enjoyed both when it came down to Y1,2 and S1,2

If you enjoy cliche kung fu 80s movies then Shenmue is for you, just like someone would recommend Yakuza series on someone liking Yakuza movies which obviously was a big inspiration for the stories and characters.
