What do you think of Metroid II? I think it's very underrated.

Metroid 2 is, for its time, a very good step forward from the first game, with an improved look for Samus that became standard for her moving forward, one of the best tunes in the whole series with the SR388 overworld theme, and power ups that would become staples from then on. It's got some flaws, ie it doesn't have a map just yet, some of the Metroid hit detection can be dicey, and some of the later tracks are ear grating, but it can't be denied this moved the series forward well.

Samus Returns is sounding pretty good judging by word of mouth who have gotten their hands on it, so I'm hopeful.

It's like a 6/10.
The main issue is the crushed screen space and huge Samus sprite, it's just hard to fight anything in such a space. And that's what you spend most of the game doing, fighting all the Metroids. The controls are better than the NES game though.
Music is way too sparse, only the central cavern has a memorable theme. It does have some pretty clever environmental storytelling though.

I didn't mind it. The areas are small enough that you don't get lost within them, and you never have to backtrack to older areas so you always know where to go next.

I recently played this about 2 weeks ago, it surprisingly holds up better than Metroid on NES.

I really like it and I think it's underrated. It nailed claustrophobia and horror atmosphere possibly better than any other game in the series.
