Why the fuck can't Japs make good UIs?

Say what you want about all other parts of Japanese games, but I don't think I've ever seen a Japanese UI that masters the simple concept of providing the player with the information and usability he needs, when it's needed and not otherwise.

This is unarguably the only thing I can think of where Western game design is objectively superior.
>>
>>389842157
You are stupid if you think Japs don't make the best UIs in videogames.

I mean look at this shit. This is happening during real-time combat. There are so many numbers and portraits and bars everywhere that it looks like one of those parody-screenshots /v/ loves of WoW flooding over UI elements.

I was just revving it up now.

I mean fucking look at this. Do AAA jap-companies not see interaction design as a valid contribution to game-design or something?

this

You have games like Persona 5 implementing good UI/UX. There's also Soulsborne plus some other games i can't seem to remember for now

is this good OP? you can even turn them off if you don't like any of them
>>
>>389842797

Persona blurs the line because in those games, the UI is pretty much designed in such a way as to emphasize the style of the game. The UI isn't just there to inform the player, but to remind them of the color schemes and tones the game uses.

Where in >>389842550 and >>389842157 it's essentially just glued on because this is information the player really needs.
>>
>>389842601
but how else will /pol/ self insert in /v/?
>>
>>389842498
>>389842550
You know you can hide whatever UI elements you want in XCX, right?
>>
>>389842498
I dunno. This is pretty much the minimum amount of info an MMO-like can give you, and all you can really do is make elements smaller (the game already has issues with text being too small for most people) and push them more towards the edges of the screen. Japanese games have a real hard-on for complying to NES-era overscan specifications though. Or maybe their eyes give them less peripheral vision or something, I dunno.
>>
>>389842915
My point was it was unfair to group it into a Japanese vs non-Japanese argument.
>>
>>389842157
Fuck am reinstalling Last remnant once again.
>>
>>389843095
Why? It's a shit game that encourages you to skip as much content and combat as possible to rush the poorly written story with the characters you don't like. There's a reason you uninstalled it.

MMO UIs are far better than whatever that is, in most cases. Designed with minimalism in mind, rather than over the top flashiness. That's key if you're going to have more than a few UI elements on the screen at once.

>>389842996

At a quick look, there's a shitload of really weird dead space on that screen. I did some quick fuckery in illustrator for an example.
>>
>>389843253
Just drag and drop the gear sets onto your hotbar.
>>
>>389842970
Those images are already hiding the only 2 elements you can get away with not having. The thing telling you what buttons do, and the squad tasks stuff. The only thing that could really change much is how the HP and tension is displayed. There's no need to have your own info in the top left, while also a duplicate being right above the arts bar, for example. There's probably a more compact way of displaying it than bars + numbers, both forms of exp gauges are also probably unnecessary, and there's no reason for the giant gap in the top left before you reach the character info either.

You really need most of the bullshit, and I've never seen an MMO that doesn't just squash as much as it can fit to the edges of the screen. No one's really figured out a better way to do it. It's also worse on consoles, where they either have to leave space on the edges to account for old tvs and people too stupid to set theirs up right, or deal with masses of complaints from those people.
>>
>>389843140
>It's a shit game
Terrible opinion
>skip as much content and combat as possible

Japs have thin eyes. They can't see shit that's off to the side which is why they're so hellbent on gluing everything around the middle parts of the screen.

I hated Dragon Age 2 like the black plague, but at least they got the UI design spot-on.
>>
>>389843309
You think you're clever, but the game is supposed to be also visible on a handheld screen. So you really aren't clever at all, just ignorant as fuck, fixing shit that really doesn't need any fixing.

Yeah, DA2's UI design is really good, but DAO's was better in terms of keeping with the core look and feeling of the game - DA2's UI is way too minimalist for a fantasy game in comparison.

>>389843531

You do realize moving things to edges doesn't actually make a game unplayable on a handheld, right? It's utilizing the screenspace more optimally in order to actually free up the game to showcase its visuals. I mean if you're really looking for something to bitch about in my 20 second UI redesign, you could say that the Map stuff is too tiny. All of that SHOULD be visible on the handheld, because it's literally just being moved around and maybe made slightly smaller.

Jesus shit, get more experience with everything, from games to UI design, before you offer shitty judgements.

Here's a screenshot from a thoroughly Japanese game by a thoroughly Japanese director (Mikami) from a thoroughly Japanese series. It's pretty very typical of the whole genre, msot of which consists of Japanese games. What now, you imbecile?
>>
>>389842157
What's stopping them? I recently played Breath of the Wild and the minimal UI does it's job nicely.
>>
>>389843717
And I'm pretty sure you've already put this on the Wii U's Controller to test it, right?
>>
What YOU don't realize is that these elements constitute gameplay. They are the gameplay. I prefer different kinds of games, but simply moving the absolutely necessary elements of the game to the sides so that you could see the cg cartoon playing underneath it better is a completely idiotic idea that's obviously coming from a person who has no idea about either game design or UI design. Go get a fucking education and some experience in either before offering "fixes".
>>
>>389844003

Please explain why the UI needs its character info to be 500 height 250 width away from the edge, and why the minimap is taking up an eighth of the screen then. It's standard tab-target MMO combat, anon, you only need your UI set up like that if you're fucking raiding.
>>
>>389844147
Because I want it to be visible and legible to everyone on my screen away from a screen?
>>
>>389843638
They get points for having a slim hud, but that's not hard when you've stripped out so much functionality to achieve it. The actual interface is kind of hilariously bad though. There's so much inconsistency in how things work, even on a menu by menu basis.

Seems fine if you made minor adjustments, the hotbar will need to be redone from scratch obviously as it's made for PC, but the rest works.
>>
>>389843717
DA:O's UI triggered my autism badly due to being so massive asymmetric. Skills should have been centered and party portraits arranged in a circle to mirror the map
>>
>>389844317

It's especially embarrassing going to FFXV after KH2, though - where Square showed that not only could they do UI design, but they could knock it out of the fucking park.

>When the speedrun is decided not by who's better at the game, but by who's better at menuing in KH2FM+

Those menus are so clean, what the fuck

OP is a fucking retard, and him posting TLR on the OP is the first giveaway, if you take even a single element of that UI then the game becomes fucking incomprehensible and unplayable, that UI is only pointing out BASIC, key info, which the player has to process according to all the other mechanics and values that are not shown in the UI.
And the fun thing is, in his hypocrisy he's not showing out actually messy UI, like WoW's tangled mess of a UI and he's only cherrypicking japanese games.
>>
>>389844516
That's not WoW's UI, it's a shit ton of addons added to it. Regardless WoW's UI is complete trash but it's also 12-13 years old.

That's a completely customized raiding UI setup which only has what's necessary, exactly like TLR

but you knew that didnt you anon?
>>
>>389844492
Honestly, I think the whole game is kind of embarrassing after KH2. I hope Nomura being on the FF7R means it's better made and less like FFXV. Probably not though.
>>
>>389842641
This pic is western UI in a nutshell. Compare it to the actual game's UI.
>>
>>389844823

Well, FFXV is more Tabata's game then Nomura's, and Tabata has no clue what goes into designing a good game, whereas Nomura showed that he can pull a rabbit out of a fucking hat over and over with the Kingdom Hearts series.

>Tabata's last game was that terrible PSP FF game that had garbage ass combat that was EXACTLY LIKE FFXV
>The main complaint about the game was that the combat was garbage
>He puts the same fucking system in XV

I hate him so much

Dork Souls UI, while I find it somewhat of a bland eyesore, is good at what it's supposed to do.

It got more refined, especially with DaS3 and BB. Those menus were about as good as they could be.
