Quest markers still ruin these types of games. Witcher 3, Skyrim, BotW and every other open world game would be 100x more immersive without them.
Disabling them in Dishonored 2 was the best decision I've ever made. Perfectly playable.

Because it requires actual effort in open world games. Linear games never need them because you can only go one direction. For open world games, every quest would need an extra line of dialogue describing where you're supposed to go.
I don't think previous Zelda games ever had quest markers, for example, but they added it in BotW because apparently it isn't fun to get lost, despite that being the entire premise of the game.

Laziness and they're genuinely afraid of the backlash when 80% of people playing their games are unwilling to read or listen to dialogue to figure out what to do or where to go. The sad thing is if you turn off objective markers in most games they are so poorly designed you won't even know where to begin if you haven't played it previously.

As another anon mentioned, Dishonored is really good at this. You get a lot of visual cues on who your target is and the levels are designed extremely well, so just by exploring you can stumble upon where you need to go or alternate ways to take out targets. Otherwise I'm struggling to think of good examples, most games offer dick to explain where to go or what to do and just put a giant beacon above your objective and lead you straight to it.
