Basically it H1Z1 and Arma DayZ were evolutions of the minecraft genre with zombies. PUBG took away the survival mechanics, added the Arma shooting and tactical mechanics and added a lot of QOL improvements into one standalone package.

This isn't a survival game. It's kill or be killed "100 enter, 1 leaves" death match where you can be as stealthy or as aggressive you want, and the gameplay still is fun and engaging either way, due to the tactical nature of the mechanics. Hide or fight? Ambush or avoid? Door open or closed? On foot or vehicle?

But there's always the looming threat of conflict, as the player count ticks down, as the battleground shrinks and tension rises. Sooner or later, you're going to have to fight.

I enjoyed BOTW but the game was definitely not populated. Yeah it's fun to traverse the world and see the sights at first, but eventually that gets boring and you're left with massive open fields with Koroks and monster camps sprinkled around it. I hope that they improve this in the inevitable sequel and add more settlements and some more expansive side quests.
