In my opinion, Lucy's VA calling it quits is what made the franchise shit the fan. They had a plan of it that involved Desmond and her ending up together but when she called it quits they had to scrap that story line and had to throw in random shit that ought to have made sense with the historic segments, and it just never meshed so they never really recovered.

Popularity, lack of gameplay evolution, and extreme hype before AC3 that was met with disappointment so now many people on /v/ lash out blindly against the series.
Admittedly, the writing went progressively more and more to shit and the gameplay really ought to have evolved in some ways.

The 2nd game was more eye candy than anything the way they created the city and stuff, gameplay might have been somewhat fresh at the time but they just kept resuing the same formula over and over and it became stale and whats even worse they applied it to their other games and even influenced other devs to take that same boring approach. In short fuck Ubisoft.

I can agree about the map. Too generic, too messy, not enough recognizable landmarks helping navigation, though it isn't much worse than some of the latest iterations. But the combat? Replay it and tell me about it.

It's easy to get stuck on your first impression of the combat being bad. Yes, it's bad, but sequels made it even worse, by adding even more versatile weapons despite not ever upping the challenge or updating the AI, because each of the games remained piss easy no matter what. As I said, they never managed to fix the flaws of the first game. AC1 combat is bad, but that of the sequels is worse.

You may even notice that the parry windows are much shorter in AC1, and once you've gotten too used to the comfortable, large parry windows and leniency of combat of the sequels, the original suddenly appears challenging as fuck until you can get used to it again.
