I liked hyrule warriors, and I like fire emblem, and some of the stuff they've talked about for the game actually looks cool, but they focused in on the exact two fire emblem games I care the least about. If there was a bigger focus on marth's crew, or literally any other games used, then I'd be way more interested. Heck, I knew they were going to be heavy with awakening and fates representation when the game was announced, but I figured I'd be ok with it so long as they didn't make up the majority of the cast.

Hector and Ike are the safest bets for DLC characters.

Hector is more popular than both Chrom and Marth according to the poll from when Heroes was announced.

If they did the same poll today, Hector could easily be the second highest rated guy beating Roy (last weeks Voting Gauntlet showed that Ike is more popular). Characters like Chrom, the Robins, many of the Awakening/Fates characters would have fallen while the top 5 guys would probably be unchanged aside from Chrom maybe being replaced with Ephriam, Ryoma would also be way more popular. Girls would have been similar but Thotja or Corrin might fall out of top 5 in favor of Celica, Nino or Ninian. Reinhardt from Thracia 766 would be a top 20 character for the series in terms of popularity simply due to his dominance in Heroes.

A lot of the Fates Royals weren't that high up in the poll, Xander, Ryoma and Corrin (male) were 41-43 in the poll that did split votes, and even if they didn't then only Xander would have the only one in the top 20 guys as Soren would have been in the top 15. The vote splitting really hurt a lot of the Radiance saga characters like Nephenee, Elincia, Mia and the aforementioned Soren.

I straight up saw someone argue that Corrin was the least popular lord using this shit despite Fem Corrin outranking every other lord below Chrom. Doesn't really support the narrative.

Then loosen your definition and try again. Not every character who wields a sword has to focus on it. Celica is primarily a mage. Leif is in a unique position to show off the Master Knight class and it would be a waste not to do that. Corrin is a fucking dragon. Their swords are largely not important to the real meat of their fighting styles.
Characters who primarily wield swords in addition to other weapons, such as Lyn or Chrom, should have no issue bringing out that other weapon for some attacks. The only real issue comes with totally sword-locked characters like Marth, Roy, and Eirika, and it doesn't take too much imagination to come up with three movesets; you can probably do something with Eirika's horse and Roy's fire bullshit.
You don't need to reach too hard to come up with characters who could add more interesting gameplay to the mix, either. Elincia is basically a lord without a game, and she's a flying unit. Azura is unfortunately very important in Fates, and she's both a lancer and a dancer. Tiki is one of the most widely known characters from Shadow Dragon, and she's a Manakete. Anna can fill basically any hole you want and nobody is going to object to her. Toss a few more units like this in and you can do far more with a cast of barely 20 than FE Warriors will do with even 30. Nobody gives a shit about the story anyway.
