There are plenty of Nintendo games that have already had in-game achievement systems. All this does it make them universal.

More like it kills replay value prematurely because people don't want to play beyond that Platinum in most cases despite the fact that a platinum doesn't even account for 100%.

>Some games on the Xbox 360 have you avatar items for certain games (Mainly exclusives) by getting specific achievements

This, really. By the time I platinum a game (if I bother) I basically never want to play the game again.

In fact, if a game forces multiple playthroughs for a platinum, that alone really sours the experience for me.

>>389800551
Is it optional for developers? I remember some behind-the-scenes video where one guy said [Microsoft/Sony] wouldn't approve their game unless they put in achievements/trophies. I'd hate having to shoehorn achievements into a game I was making in order for it to simply make it to the storefront.

The trophy option will give me more playtime. Simple as that.
>>
>>389801778
I remember that was the case with Monster Hunter Portable 3rd on PS3.
It along with not helping with the attempted localization is the reason why there was a lot of tension between the MH team and Sony until now.

Sorry, trophies are cancer. Yes, they're optional for people who don't care about completionism, but for people who like to check shit off, they're a goddamn plague.

Also MHW isn't exactly exclusive, at least it's not outside of Japan.
>>
>>389801778
If I was making a game, basically all the trophies would be unmissable and done pretty much automatically in one playthrough. That way people who continue to play would be doing so completely because they want to.

Stamps were usually easy, though. I think the only immediate exceptions I can remember are a handful of Wii Sports Resort and Nintendoland minigames, and admittedly some of those latter challenges were hard as fuck.

You're given a finite list of things to do as opposed to going at your own leisure in other words when that's done the game feels done as opposed to going through the game and doing the optional content not associated with that checklist.
In other words it's cutting your play time.
>>

That falls under attempted localization. It had something to do with the Ad hoc party thing but the west had no equivalent for that and Sony refused to help with it.

Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and X had in-game Achievement systems as well, and those weren't merely cosmetic or E-penor comparison. Each Achievement nailed got you items and EXP. Not sure that's an entirely good thing for all games though.

>>
>>389805403
They weren't the strongest items in the game, but they had some use. Others were pretty useful, like the unlocks in Goldeneye for beating different levels and difficulties fast enough. The modern achievement systems are just checkboxes on your out-of-game profile.

Eh. Like anything they have their pros and cons. They can encourage players to try new parts of games, and are optional which are good,(plus it's proof that someone did at least beat the gamr or something). The problem stem with their implementation (IMO, online and multiplayer trophies have got to go), and how those can be lost to time or how some devs don't bother giving any other rewards besides them.

I mean, high scores aren't necessary and were used for bragging purposes for many games, but they still exist.

And most game devs are fine with this because they can turn around and use achievement-related statistics to see which parts of their game (e.g. features, modes) people actually bothered with so they know how to better prioritize their development time on future titles.

You dope.

There is nothing wrong with achievements, except they should only be given for beating the game (so you know if someone beat it) or really difficult stuff, like 1cc ones for shoot em ups or challenge runs.

>>
>>389800297
If you don't like them so much just turn the notifications off. That's what I've done on my PS4 and my 360. I even disabled the steam ingame overlay to avoid the notifications. Unless Nintendo are big idiots (which they often are) there should be a toggle for the popups.

Original achievements are smart and add replay value. Geometry Wars had the pacifism achievement which was so fun it ended up getting a fill mode in future games. Getting achievements for speedrunning Metroid would be awesome. Getting an achievement for beating any Zelda with minimal upgrades would be awesome.

Fuck anyone who thinks they don't add anything to a game. You're just upset because it will expose that you never beat the game in the first place. Alternatively people who complain that it adds more to do like it's a bad thing should just kill themselves. "I don't want to feel obligated to do anything but the bare minimum so adding achievements for 100% completion rates are stupid"

As long as the developers aren't required to have them and there's a way to turn achievement notifications off, I'm fine with it.
That said, I think the best way Nintendo could handle achievements is by giving them tangible value. They already have a "Switch themes" section in the options menu, but it only has light/dark. What I'd do, personally, is make it so that you could unlock themes through achievements, either by tying certain themes to certain achievements, or by giving each achievement some sort of point value that can be spent on themes. Not only would it encourage faggots who normally don't finish games to, you know, actually finish them, but it'd give you actual tangible rewards outside of a shitty little "you've earned this achievement" marker that most games have.

Of course, that's just wishful thinking. It's probably just going to be a regular-ass achievement system, and that's fine too.

I'd like that idea. I just wish the Switch had released with all this shit, the OS was obviously rushed for release, even if it is pretty clean.
>>
I bet Nintendo's putting all their efforts into this while ignoring shit that actually should've been there day 1 like VC and apps.
>>
>>389807492
Oh, don't get me wrong, I don't actually do them if they're shit that annoys me.

What gets to me about it all though, is that I can 100% a game's actual content, and then at some point in the future if I start getting into a conversation about shit regarding the game, people are going to look at my trophy list and discount my opinion because I haven't "completed" it. There's also the fact that there's something sitting on my system telling me I haven't "completed" it when I actually have, but just haven't spent an extra 20 hours running in circles to get the fucking trophy to pop.

I can turn off notifications, and delete games with a 0% completion from my list, but I can't hide my trophies unless I fucking hide my entire profile from people. That's annoying as fuck.

There should just be a way to completely stop participation with trophies altogether without affecting anything else.
>>
>>389807646
You can do any of that without the achievement though. Meanwhile, with achievements in place, the game is basically saying "you haven't completed me" because you haven't done some lame-ass speedrun, even though you're not a speedrunner, and don't enjoy speedruns. That's fucking stupid. No, it doesn't add anything to the game.

A lot of games in that small window between the introduction of achievements and the oversaturation of DLC nickel and diming tied their unlockables to achievements, which is how things usually worked anyway. I won't deny that it basically got rid of cheat codes though.
