Naw dude. Watch Shiki Jitsu, the film he made after End of Eva.

Its about an animation director who leaves to do live action, because he felt that despite his work being his best way to interact with other people, all people were doing was using it to escape. He feels that with live action, he'll be more genuine.

He meets Stephan Seagal's half Japanese Daughter who is undergoing a psychotic episode and tries to help her while filming her. In filming her, he finds all he is doing is constructing a fantasy of her and preserving it in film.

The way eva fans used his work to escape from their problems instead of solving them literally made him run away from the industry and give up. Now he just doesmt give a fuck about eva, wants to make mad cash off of it and use it to fund the animation expo, Shin Gojira, and Tokusetsu museums and shit.

He went from " i was a mistake" to " my anime was a mistake" to " i must sacrifice my artistic credentials for the capital so I can do at least some good in this world."

Rei is very good but she's this Spock like ideal that can never be achieved. She's like this platonic ideal ego without the coping attitudes people usually lean on for trauma.

Misato is probably all around best for me right now, but when i was more fucked up I definitley leaned red, because Asuka is so Worst she overflows and wraps around to being best again.

Its just a really good series. Tons of shit about how and why people use each other, hurt each other, need each other, and are afraid of each other. Alot of media doesnt go into how up and down shit can get while eva does. The way Ive always out it is if your average story is about climbing a mountain, NGE is about climbing out of the ditch you've dug for yourself.

Evangelion isn't about otaku culture.
That's just a simplistic interpretation spread by nerds who can't separate the show's universal themes from the circumstances of its creation and think everything has to be about them.

If Eva were really an "otaku show" then it wouldn't have the mass appeal it does. I didn't know shit about anime or the Japanese anime fanbase when I first watched Eva, but I was still able to relate to the characters. I'll bet a lot of people ITT had the same experience.
