back when they were both alive (flowey as asriel.) they were adopted siblings. flowey retained those memories.

chara went full mad man and made a plan to basically kill themselves and made asriel go with it so that they could combine souls and break the barrier to the outside world. they actually did it and tldr, the humans outside were assholes and killed asriel, and the remnants of their souls got spread around.

So did Chara die and then posses frisk when you enter?

Because I figured that Flowey knew Chara before the events of the game, as in, before you fell down, so Chara's "soul" must have already been down there.

As we can tell, "Chara" is just shorthand for "Character" which implies an empty soul that just goes about killing enemies and gaining xp etc. like in most games.

The nature of chara/frisk is left mysterious. Some of the things we are told about them don't make sense if taken at face value. Chara shouldn't be to take your soul if they're a human, so they are something other than human (at least after death). Your "human soul" breaks apart faster than either toriel or asgore, which contradicts what the story says about humans and their souls.

You are playing as Frisk. When Frisk falls onto the flowers (which are Chara's gravesite) the remains of Chara's soul is revived and attaches to Frisk. At that point they're both potentially in control of that body, but because Chara just got revived he is confused and doesn't know what he should be doing, so he looks to what you do for guidance and lets you control, offering information on things you check as well as battle tips and the general hud.
Frisk is still essentially the protagonist, with Chara acting as a backup/support who can be led down a dark path by your actions, eventually believing and assisting your goal to destroy the world, or getting pissed at you thinking you can just kill shit for fun and get away with it.
Chara was Flowey/Asriel's adoptive brother after he first fell down. He idolized him and starts projecting him onto you in the final battle even though he was a bit different though still a good person (or assumes he took control of Frisk in Genocide end because you/Frisk is acting like someone without a soul with all the murder and he realises if Chara came back he would be the same as him). They don't think you actually are Chara, they're reminded of him because of how you spread the hope of cooperation between humans and monsters.

While the Vault Dweller is canonically recognized as a hero, the Chosen One's life story is much more ambiguous, which means he could have easily been the meanest son of a bitch in the wasteland. Just because he opposed a genocidal plan that would have gotten him killed along with everyone else doesn't make him a hero.

Same with the Courier; regardless of their allegiance, the Courier can be either a devil or a saint.
