That is easy to explain, whenever Mario loses a life another Mario reaches Isle Delfino by plane but before the plane lands time is reversed so all the events happen again, them there is a time skip to the point where the last Mario died where this new Mario may or not do things differently

I've always been curious what the pictures in SMS guide book say, too blurry to make out all the text. On Pinna Park example looks like Yoshi says "Please accept my best wishes" on the first line, can't really make out the other. Wonder if any readable versions of the images exist somewhere.
