Xenoblade X required a basic install pack that was huge, the optional ones were needed or else you would load even more between areas and have literally invisible enemies popping in from no where even if they were right in front of you.

A switch comes with 32gig of internal memory. And xbox one and ps4 harddrives are actually not that big because all the games are bloated as fuck (between 30-60gig each even with disks) and PC games are also equally as bloated these days.

Consoles require installs because they cheaped out on the Disk drives and HDDs would read faster than them anyway. Also puts more wear on the user replaceable HDD instead of the laser that's much harder to replace.
Switch starting to require a memory card is going to be because the carts are expensive and if they're 1 or 2GB away from using a smaller sized cart they might just start having 1 or 2 GB patches be common so they can save some dosh. Switch games don't actually require game installs because the carts are fast enough.

I don't think it's that big a deal though, but I think that's where people see the difference in the 2 situations.
