In the beginning there was Naked Snake, later called many names, but ultimately Big Boss.
He got cloned into Solid Snake, Liquid Snake and Solidus Snake. Reasons for that go from research into "soldier genes" to simply someone who could take down Big Boss if he ever went crazy. Which he did. So Solid Snake took him down, at first in Metal Gear 1, but that seemed to have been this medic dude you see in MGSV. Then in Metal Gear 2 it was the real Big Boss and Snake took care of him with a lighter and deodorant. You read that right.
But just when Snake thought he could get a break, Liquid Snake crawled out and inspired by his life-long daddy issues, as well as many other misconceptions and whatnot, tried to push the world into metaphorical hell. He failed.
Metal Gear Solid 2 gave us the third clone, Solidus Snake, who was supposed to be the perfect clone of Big Boss, freeing the world from Patriots as he saw right, except he was killed by a twink who he raised as a mad killer back in Liberian war, and whose codename was initially also Snake. You know him as Raiden.
MGS4 is just Snake wrapping things up for real.
