It's literally why Werehog/Wisps/Pintsize happened. Sega feels like they need filler to pad out otherwise-short Modern Sonic games but they're afraid to use other characters now.

Thanks Taxman for making Tails/Knuckles able to play through a full Sonic game for the first time since Advance 3 in 2004 (Jesus Christ Sega).

Only if you're not well versed in how to use her. Amy's got a lot of cool tricks for getting around quickly with hammer jumps in 1. I do think being able to roll like in 2 would be nice though; but she should totally have her hammer stuff from 1 if she ever comes back. That shit's fun as fuck.

advance 1 amy was interesting because she was slower and couldn't ball up so running around stages was problematic, but her multiple ways to jump real high, her shitty spindash replacement being able to be used on slopes or without coming to a complete stop and the huge hitbox on her hammer meant that amy was great for platforming/vertical levels, slopes and boss fights.

She had actual niches that let her approach the same levels in a different way, which is the entire idea of having non sonic characters in the first place. in advance 2 amy is just sonic with some shitty hammer moves that got nerfed like crazy instead of the useful stuff sonic has

Indeed. And the problem with that complaint is that it was literally just media buzzword bullshit. The friends were the scapegoat, when the actual issue was the half-assed nature of the alternative playstyles in most of their iterations. One of the greatest aspects of Sonic 2, S3&K, the advance trilogy, and even Adventure 1 was being able to go through the same stages in different ways that made interesting use of the characters' unique abilities. It's what made stages like red mountain in SA1 so great as well and the absence of this which makes Sonic Heroes a slog at points since that game just made every type of character almost entirely the same as every other.

Actually, I have to disagree. Once you got to Sonic Adventure and more so in SA2 and beyond, Sonic stopped being the main character and was really just along for the ride with the brand new characters being the only thing really driving the plot. Adding a grand-scale story to the Sonic formula really just served to unfocus things to such an extent that it became actively detrimental to the games.

No one likes OCs introduced in every new game in 2000s for the sake of OC centric edgy plot. They don't contribute to the gameplay or bring anything unique whatsoever, they're all just reskins but added for gayass reason. Name a single character with unique gameplay other than Tails or Knuckles. (Advance 1 Amy can pass.)

I kinda feel that works for sonic (to an extent; 06 went too far and basically had him as an entirely irrelevant non-factor to the core plot). Sonic even at his best has almost never really been the "core" of a narrative, so much as the one barreling into it and fucking shit up. I actually think SA2 probably balanced it best though, wherein Dark story had all the big plot developments, while Sonic was blazing through with one-liners, dropping in meeting the president, and being an action hero in his side's story.
