Because it's really hard to get into. Kharg is a really, really bland protagonist for the first few chapters. And if you don't know that there's something more there, it's easy to drop it and forget it. I was lucky, I read about the Deimos characters on flyingomelettes website in 2004 and was hooked on the setting. Darc is still one of my favorite protagonists ever, and Natural Selection IS my favorite boss theme. But if I had just rented the game blind I almost certainly would have dropped it before ever seeing Darc.

I remember this having the most amazing animations when I was a kid. (protip, never look up videos of games you remember looking amazing)

Also, I played through almost the whole game before realizing you could pull out your second sword.
