My main problem is that I haven't really played modern games, and so someone will ask what games I like and end up saying "basically anything old". Then they'll say the play PUBG, or LoL or Dota2 and then the conversation sorta stops until we figure out a game we both play

This. I don't play AAA games, movie games or mobas and each time I start talking with someone about games is awkward af. They try to talk about fps but I don't play them. I don't care about survival games either. Closest game to normie tastes I play is TW:W and still majority of my friends don't even know that such a game exist.
