Actually, I'd argue Hatred really isn't that edgy.
The developers were clearly aware that the game was violent and dark to the point of being comical. They just used it to get publicity. In short, the developers didn't expect people to look at hatredman and think "wooooaah what a badass. I am so in awe of his personality. I'm horrifies and fascinated at the same time."

To me, it's that intention to create a serious character plus the lack of self-awareness coming together and falling flat that makes an edgy game

Both the music and the writing of the game have slowly grown on me over the years.

Hatred is a shitty indie game that's not nearly as violent as most other games, they just stirred up a controvery to sell a shitty game. There's a reason why they made their second game about fucking ISIS, it's just that no one gave a fuck at this point.

in all fairness it is a masterpiece

Nobody talk about Devil may cry 3? All the DMC's games are edgy in fact but the 3rd is the edgiest by far, there is even a typical sasuke character in the form of your brother that every nerds seems to like I don't know why.

Those games even design every enemy to be never more cool than Dante, only Virgil could be considered in a way. Some demons or boss can be a bit cool but they never overpass them.
In a way they are designed to make you feel your character even cooler in comparison.
