PUBG's skyrocketing popularity is the reason I took notice and now want to purchase it.

It's popular, but I still just don't enjoy it. I tried but it just isn't fun for me. I can see why people like it but I don't think it has staying power.

I agree. If the devs don't focus on mechanics, bugs, and gameplay they're going to lose a lot of people.
For instance, vaulting was teased ages ago but is not even in the next "big" update. Something that is very necessary and the current workaround for could be considered abuse.
Moreso, the bugs. Cars clipping into the ground and exploding, being able to go below the map for an easy 1st or 2nd, the wonky ass hit reg. The list goes on. Early access isn't really an excuse when you are 1m active players deep on a $20 game, with microtransactions.

The gameplay, or entirely the gunplay, is going to bore people very soon. The games almost always end in large fields. Didn't get an sks with a good scope? Shame. Dropped at school and entered 6 rooms to find nothing but smoke nades, to run into a guy with a double barrel? Shame.
Game needs a big changeup in the coming months to make sure it's not another indie die-out

The game is perfect time killer. You either die within 10 minutes and start over because you haven't even played the game, or you survive long enough to actually care and try to win. It's very simple, yet very effective game design.
I caved in and bought it about a week ago. It can be really fun and intense, but 90% of time it's pretty boring. Not my cup of tea really, but I get why people play it so much.

TF2 and PUBG are both plagued by botters who just want to sell crates and items, so the numbers are artificially high.

As a legit player I'm happy I was able to recoup the $30 I spent on PUBG by spending my legit points, but this isn't a perfect scenario for enjoying a real game when 10 of your 100 enemies are just afk-droppers. Also afk-droppers bomb the price of crates down, so I'd prefer to see them banned so I can just make more money passively

Streamers bring curious monkeys into the market, so to preserve the streamers fragile ego stream sniping is a bannable offense on PUBG.

That said, I really don't get the popularity of PUBG. Maybe I'm blind but in every stream I've seen of it I don't see it as anything more than a copy paste of H1Z1's king of the kill mode.
