What this guy said. I fully contend MGS1 is about as good as the genre can get if the aim is more toward arcade style timing based sneaking and MGS3 is the peak for the slower paced weightier stealth game the series developed into.

Depends a bit on mood, but the top three are my favorites. MGS3 is a great game but it marked the introduction of a lot of sloppiness. Rating MGS1 equal to the original is probably a little unusual, but it's largely because MGS1 barely cares about being a stealth game. MG1 is a lot more compelling on replays because it stays focused on exploring and sneaking most of the time. I greatly prefer MG2 and GB for similar reasons. MGS1 is closest to MGS4 with respect to its emphasis on action sequences. It's just much better at it than MGS4.

I played it and that's how I know I don't like it. It's technically impressive and there are definite strong points to the game but the plot is stupid and pointless and the whole game is designed with co-op in mind at the expense of solo play.

I didn't say that you couldn't do everything in the game solo, I said the game was clearly balanced around co-op play for numerous reasons, and the whole experience suffers for it.

I can name a shitton of better games on the PSP. Castlevania Dracula X, DBZ Tenkaichi Tag Team, Daxter, Patapon, Disgaea, the FF port, P1-3, and a bunch of PS1 ports including Silent Hill 1, RE1-3, MGS1, Dino Crisis 1 and 2, FFV-IX, Parasite Eve, I could go on.
Peace Walker wouldn't make the Top 100 PSP games

5 didn't control like a car made from surplus Russian tank parts.

The second-to-second gameplay is infinitely more polished.

Mother Base actually feels tangible and gives the real sense of building and strengthening it.

For what it was PW was actually a good game, I probably got more enjoyment out of it than 4 and the story wasn't quite as fucked (by MGS standards). 4 is still the better game in spite of its shortcomings it had some of the best gameplay (the little there is) in the series. If PW had bigger open "corridors" like 4, controls that weren't designed for one analog stick, AI that isn't fucking stupid to make up for the fucked controls & less grinding the same boss for parts it would be the superior game. I liked V so much because it was basically a good version of Peace Walker.
