i didn't want to at first but the more you play the games you realize that the combat was designed entirely around V.A.T.S. even in New Vegas it helps considerably despite being considerably nerfed. when you start taking perks to make you more accurate though, that's when you start crossing into cheaty territory.

The engine is fucking atrocious and as a shooter it sucks dicks
That's why FO4 sucks so much compared to everything else. Has no exploring, no RPG, no interesting setting or quests, no NPCs or choices worth a shit, and it's foucsed only in the shooting, where the shooting also fucking sucks.

Because the combat is shit.

Shooting in 3 and NV is garbage, not to mention you move slower than everything other than humans, so you need to be able to actually hit stuff since everything can just swarm you. Finally VATS ignore the buginess and just fucking does damage even if the enemy's hitboxes are glitching

Fallout 3 shoehorned it in just so they could get away with calling it fallout and made every gun have garbage accuracy to force it on you. New vegas improved general accuracy but just kept vats because they reused so many assets it's a glorified mod. It's just in the game for show, not because of casuals or whatever.

idk what it was about it, but i loved that shit. replayed the game last year and that was mostly what i was interested in, until i realized if the base game is so shit after going through the story levels that im just grinding through everything else for chaos drives then its entirely not worth playing

Some perks take advantage of VATS. Also you get a boost to critical hits.

Not to mention waiting for some jackass to run around a corner and unloading multiple shotgun blasts into their face before they can blink is pretty neat.

I only used it for shits and giggles. What little I did play of 1 and 2 it had more purpose but since 3 it kind of felt worthless minus hitting eyes maybe in small spots like Mirelurk kings in their eyes, etc etc.
