This is from a techies player perspective so I apologize.

If I KNOW there is a person who can out range and out damage my mines easily, I tend to favour stasis mines over anything else. If I know there is a squishy ability spammer, I tend to go for my suicide a lot more. Your play style directly changes as a result on what the enemy chose and their playstyle in game. Unless if you are playing say, Anti mage or Axe, that goes for most heroes. Another example is Bane, whether you want to level enfeeble or nightmare more.

Stasis mines only work when they dont get triggered by creeps and yea you can get a couple kills here and there with suicide but theres also a high chance you die. Been playing since 2011... Am finally thinking about retiring from the game. When I started playing I was working a job that allowed me a lot of free time. Until 2014 I was able to actually practice game mechanics and git fairly good. Through my bachelors and now into my masters degree, I just dont have the time to practice skills or mechanics anymore. I'm not awful, I'll just never realistically progress at the game. Other games, however, I can just pick up and play, and put down, then come back months later and get the same multiplayer enjoyment....

And to be honest, even with the good shifts in meta in Dota, I'm just beginning to think it might be getting stale for me. I'm not motivated to play anymore. It doesn't feel as exciting as it used to. I guess that's a good thing.

I tend to play Techies aggressively, meaning I put a lot of mines behind enemy lines instead of defensively on my side. For me, it really isn't about the farm because Techies only needs a Scepter and mana items. I also tend to use mines to push back lanes rather than actual defense or kills. Yeah, techies needs an Aghs, Euls, soul ring, and mana boots before he can be worth a damn. He can't farm for shit early game because he can't safelane carry, solo offlane is giving enemy a free lane and techies is easy as shit to zone, and techies mid has zero rune control or ability to do anything really. So basically you have to hope the enemy is retarded to do anything on techies because if they are smart they will group early before you can do jack shit.

All it takes is one, maybe two mines tops snuck somewhere unexpected to utterly fuck someone into a bad position. It only takes a bit of lane dominance to make the side shop just not feasible for the other team to use freely. Meanwhile, your lane buddy is getting more exp and gp since you are frequently going for walks. Additionally, it makes your lane buddy harder to gank, since a prospective ganker needs to either buy something to find mines, or else risk wasting even more time when they get dropped below a key HP threshhold. You make enemies use suboptimal paths to chase or escape, since they can't deal with the mines right this second, you get free wards on runes and rosh. Even if someone is killing your mines, the cost of that bounty is less than a wasted ward. Don't spam red mines, especially if someone is adamant about getting rid of them, exactly how you don't spam other sources of bounty.
Plus, half the point of using Techies is to get people to hesitate that moment before they grit their teeth and just go through a path they haven't used recently, or even better not risk it.
Frankly, techies can swing a match even if they never actually hit a single hero with mines. It's obviously better if they do, but the mindgames, lane presence, and gold drain on detection can be enough.

But being clueless is the best part. It's one of the most fun aspects of the game IMO. There's no greater feeling to me than taking a break from Dota and returning when a major patch hits. Icefrog makes so many big changes in his patches that you say "Man I want to try that hero out now" many times when reading the notes.

I've taken a break for a few months (watched all of TI though) but will definitely be returning when the two new heroes and their patch hits.
