The thing is I didn't play it when it came out (nor was I a child, since I was already 11 when VII was released), I played it a couple years after X came out in 2003, and X was my first FF. Personally I think VII is a much better game than X and it's the only FF I play the whole way through every year.

Played this game when I was 8ish and loved it, it completely blew me away and changed my whole worldview on how seriously a video game can take itself, or how involved you can get in a video game.

I thought replaying it would probably destroy my memories of it since the main impression it left on me was its ambition, which has become par for the course nowadays. But I olayed it again at 25 (for the first time since my initial playthroughs) and it's still great. Materia is very creative and complex, there's good variety of gameplay, good music, good pacing, lots of secrets, and I don't think it slogs. The storytelling is good and the characters are charming.

Almost everyone I talk to about FF7 misremembers large chunks of the story, because of the compilation changing things and crucial facts are often only implied. I didn't realize until my adult playthrough that Shin-ra is just a power company, they're the richest company on the planet and they're the de-facto world government half because of their vast wealth and half because they had to form a military force to protect them against groups like avalanche. Turns out you make a lot of enemies when you put a bunch of coal miners out of business and when you literally make electricity out of dead human souls.

A lot of the theming of the game (technology and automation putting blue collar workers out of business, the gap between the rich and the poor, destruction of the environment in pursuit of money) is pretty relevant and pretty well done, I think.

I didn't really realize FF7 was my favorite FF game until I replayed.

Like you mentioned, I appreciate the variety in the gameplay and I actually enjoy the characters a lot. It's actually a very silly game with dark elements. The setting also feels very "lived in" and believable despite being populated by lego people.

Let me tell you why the materia system sucks compared to other FF title ( which you probably didnt play yet to compare)

I think FVII represents a rare well-executed marriage of cinematics and gameplay.
It's no wonder it proved to be such a winning formula as it's a pretty natural fit for a RPG due to the nature of the gameplay.

Midgar is so tightly scripted, paced and well-designed, it's a shame the game ever leaves and turns into wandering a barren open world from locale to locale looking for Sephiroth.
Junon is quite fun too though, infiltrating the Shinra parade and shit.

I seriously think if the entire FF7 were on par with the beginning couple hours and Midgar it would easily be a 10/10.
I can't really think of another RPG that's managed to make me feel like it's moving at a frantic breakneck pace where you can never turn back
all while giving you ways to customize how you build your characters and assemble your team except maybe Fire Emblem 7.

What the fuck? No it doesn't. Squall's junctions go on Laguna, and Kiros and Ward depend on whoever is in the middle and bottom slot. And even then, you can still switch Junction settings between characters, so I don't see how this is an issue.

FFVII's story is an allegory for man chasing and confronting its own idealized image of itself only to destroy it for being altogether alien (lmao). Commentary on capitalist economics and how they play into these same themes plays an extremely strong role, as does Oedipus.
