Why Forza 7 at native 4K will look visualy dull and mute one Xbox one X.

You've might've heard the latest buzzword of the gaming industry being 4K you may associate the term with high quality imagrey but that's kind of a blanket statement, a stretch of the truth and I'm here to tell you why.

The long story short: 99% of games aren't ready for 4K especially AAA and major visual comprimises are made to hit that resolution so other games that are being rendered at even half the resolution will basically look superior simply because they will have higher asset & texture quality, superior IQ, lod, lighting tech etc.

Here's a very good example of a AAA game quickly put together in 1 year built for 4K:

1.) Cars in Forza 7 just don't look all that great especially the Nissan under weather, it looks very flat. The lighting on those cars and the environments are just not convincing or impressive even in daylight when you see all the cars group together the materials and lighting just don't come well together and everything including the environment is affected with the same issue.

2.) Lots of low resolution textures; under the canopies, distanct mountain/hill textures, very low and weak ground + road textures and foliage/grass on the tracksides that even suffer from close pop-in. If the game is to so use many weak textures, it's only obvious that it would be highlighted at 4K. However, what's most grating is that it's easily noticeable in motion, there is something very strange going on with it's lod. It seems that foreground textures are ok whilst the car approaches but even before the car passes you would see minimized and smeared texture detail. The transition from ok textures to smeared textures as the car races across sidetrack detail is very abrubt and quite visible in motion and it's not MB which I'm describing here. It looks like a cost cutting measure which is strange, because XBONEX has all that ram. You would think textures and higher lod would be a no brainer.

3.) 4k and 60fps in-game are highlights but the game uses 30fps reflections, mirrors and intros which are alot of compromises but the issue is that with 30fps intros is there's still a lot of aliasing, lots of shimmering, so it's not strange that you will notice A LOT of IQ issues at 4k 60fps while playing. There's lots of aliasing in gameplay along thin lines, side track detail and on many parts of the cars. Lots of shimmering in the foreground and on distant oblects, it's especially noticeable when a whole lot of cars cut a corner or even one car for that matter. The thing is, all of this is easily noticeable in motion. One of the biggest IQ detractors you'll see is that fences have a very distracting moire noise pattern. The tech guys on this video try to beef up the EQAA method over PC's MSAA but you should not be convinced it's all that effective for Forza's needs, there's a lot it's not covering and TAA would be much more effective.

4.) No headlights in tunnels in the pitch of black. Does the headlights kill performance? Why? This has been an issue since Forza 4 and if that is so we can be sure this is not a big either.

The idea that the XBONEX version of Forza 7 somehow eclipses the PC is dishonest. Looking at the texture issue, effects quality and the lod issue we spoke about, I can't imagine these things will not be better on PC, including EQAA. If EQAA is better than MSAA in this instance, despite some of the coverage issues we've highlighted above, you should be pretty sure the option will be on PC as well. We forget that there are AMD cards out there, especially the recent Vega cards and even the older Polaris, I'm sure they will handle EQAA just fine.

Bottom line: Forza 7 looks kind of bad and cheap since it was put together so quickly purely for 4k without having the assets and tech truly ready for the reoslution and framerate.

- no manual DRS use
- incorrect simulation of hybrid drive systems
- no battery charge with kinetic energy recovery
- no settings for recovery mode
- no distinction between gasoline motor enhancing and wheel-driving battery power use
- doesn't apply battery power to the correct axle if different from standard driven axle

I'm sure I could come up with more and for the record, Assetto Corsa for example simulates all of the above and most of it pretty well. Also, that was only the car-simulation, didn't even go in the general simulation aspects like flat spotting, correct DRS zones and rules, Push-to-pass (with rules), wind direction, air density with temperature... actual sims do all of those.
