If you just have a cursory interest in it, get the Standard Edition when it goes on sale (next Free Weekend will be in November) or just buy a CD key.
If you read the FAQ on Ubi's site or /vg/, you'll know that the grind is real for Standard Edition with no option to upgrade. You use the renown you grind for to pay for operators(playable characters) as well as attachments, DLC operators (hella expensive already), and cosmetics.
If you're one of those people who already plan on putting 2,000 hours into this then I might say you'd be fine getting Starter but for the average player it's just going to make playing more of a chore than a fun activity.

That's because there is no way to balance them. The pump shotguns are perfectly balanced, but the semi-auto shotguns used to be completely fucking broken until they got a hard nerf about a year ago. There should be no semi-auto shotguns in the game. DMRs are shit because you can't spray for the headshot while everyone else can, and LMGs with good recoil and damage would be insanely overpowered with such a big mag size.

The solution is to replace all the semi-auto shotguns with pump actions, replace all the LMGs with assault rifles, and put all the DMRs in the trash where they belong.

The starter edition only if you want to put in literally 10 times as many hours to buy the default operators. Each faction has 4 operators and the first one you buy of each faction costs 500, the second 1000, third, 1500, and the fourth 2000. Buying attachments for your guns costs around 1000 so if you bought one operator from each faction for both attacker and defense you'd spend around 17,500 renoun. The starter edition has every single default operator cost like 12,000. Then the DLC operators cost 25,000 for both versions so you're going to need hundreds of hours to get all the ops no matter what but unless this is the only game you're playing, it's going to take you like a solid year to buy everyone

Fuck no, he was nerfed so much because he'd just sit on a fucking window immortal in platinum+ matches completely denying an entire sightline.
Lower skilled players are not affected by him, not only do people in gold and below play him wrong but most people aim for legs/torso to begin with.

Mira doesn't get to peek with the mirror preventing her from dying. The few things you can do with her windows are entirely counter-able with smokes, flashes, prefiring and gadgets.
If you tune into any competent players stream the moment the enemy team picks BB they get salty because of an unwritten honor code "Thou shalt not pick BB unless thy enemy did first."

Yeah, that's how it usually goes, there's someone who completely owns the game with a 3 speed operator, just storming in and destroying everyone. It's not necessarily that others in the round don't know to play, it's just that *that* guy is so much better.

The other end of the spectrum are the rounds when someone average-skilled (knows what every op does, doesn't do anything actively detrimental, knows the basic layouts of maps and the site approaches) gets matched with total newbies and wins the game just by using Glaz's thermal scope through smokes or Fuzing the whole cooped-up enemy team at once.

Both of those scenarios are shit for the majority of people in the match and shouldn't happen, at least not so often as they happen now.

A big part of that probably comes from the fact that all the simplest possible ideas for operators are already used up:

I mean, the more you have operators, the harder it is to come up with good ideas for new ones. If I had to create a set of new operators for a hypothetical 3rd season, it would most likely take forever and end up with some even more complex ideas, because all the most obvious are already taken.

I think the issue is rainbow is a team based tactics game. But when you just have one guy go ash and rush in killing everyone solo its just a run and gun. If you want a game were you can superman solo win for your team there are other games. It always hurts when the team with the better strat loses cause I guy ran in and killed you first bullet. I know this will always happen in any FPS game but it happens way to much IMO.
