The first Megami Tensei novel was hardcore edgy shit with Loki trying to rape Izanami. This entire series has been edgy from the start.

Even when years later the Persona series started, it was fairly dark. In P2, the villain straight up butchers a bunch of the mafia without giving a shit.

Besides PQ, P4 (and it's spin offs) and P5, all of the games/novels/drama CDs have been pretty dark.

PQ ends up being that way. They handle it rather well too, albeit a bit obviously. Probably the best part was the Kind Doctor's battle quotes and the final night of Inaba Pride Festival with the memorial box.
