I thought 3 and 4 were okay, DmC was better than 2 but worse than 3/4. 1 is still my favorite though, combat might be a little slower but that doesn't necessarily make it bad and it feels like everything else the game does it still better than the newer ones.

In terms of defeating enemies? Easier. He can be more technical to play in a way given that he has three melee weapons at once, if that's what you're insinuating. Not like he has significantly more options than any single Dante set up, but he can be weird to play if you're not used to switching between three weapons.

To this day, Vergil's boss themes and how they change noticeably with each fight while retaining their leitmotif that dates back to DMC1, is probably my favourite thing in vidya.

I call bullshit on this. 4:SE Vergil has some shit like Just-Frame JCs and Concentration is kinda difficult to git gud at managing when you're first starting out. You also have to manage his Summoned Swords for the teleports, which is pretty important. Yeah, he's even more OP than 3:SE Vergil but there's also a lot more to him.

Meanwhile, in 3:SE, he's pretty much brain dead, if also fun as fuck.

Did you even watch that video? 95% of vergil players have NEVER reached that level of Vergil and only a few have been able to. While in DMC4 more than 50% can (including myself) can do Vergil's shit. Most people even agree that he's easier in DMC4.

While I got decent with 3 Vergil, I never did put too much time into 4 Vergil, although I've always wanted to, and I never got the hang of Just-Frame Judgment Cuts and stuff like that, so it always seemed to me that he was harder to learn than 3 Vergil.

Also, I never noticed that the weapon wheel in 4:SE was reversed. That's probably why I kept on getting confused when I was playing him. I know the 3:SE weapon wheel like the palm of my hand. It always seemed a little 'off' to me for some reason.

This stuff was always in service of the gameplay though. Combos and other more stylish ways to take down enemies than just spamming attack made you less exposed to other enemies sneaking up on you, either because you're in a better position or just because you thin the crowd faster. Getting a high style ranking in a fight rewarded you with more orbs to buy important skills or items and gave you actual combat benefits like making CC easier to mash. It was a way to make the basic "fight mans and get to end of level" gameplay have more depth going on

That doesn't mean the intention was "hack bloody palace so it's a single fodder enemy with infinite HP and juggle it for 30 seconds for e-cred". Like, I get it, they stopped making these games and after a while talking about gameplay strats got a little tiresome, especially because these games tend to have stuff that raises your stylish rank sufficently while being exploitable as hell like DMC3 royal guard or dmc4 distortions, so the fact that they stopped making games like this means people who invested too much time into this series had to make their own fun. But this mindset that DMC4 isn't an insanely flawed game just because dante has a ton of ways to keep an enemy in midair is just wrong

And of course, making combos. The reason you see many people select Bloody Palace in DMC4 is because it's easy to get to the type of enemies you want to improve on and that even includes Bosses.
