I honestly don't understand the game or how it appeals to people. It is run by a business that literally caters to streamers and bans "stream snipers" without having to provide evidence. Said business also went back on the promise not to include microtransactions in their early access premium game and added lootcrate cancer.

They're also pushing competitive and esports in a game that has potential game breaking bugs such as one where buildings aren't loaded on the FUCKING CLIENT of a person and that lets them noclip and kill people through them. ive seen people compare the luck factor to something like poker, make the best of the hand you're dealt etc.. and to an extent you can certainly make things happen with a shit hand in this game, especially considering how much fuckery goes on with the shitass way it plays, early game lag/desync and everything else. i've been on both ends of the early game AR vs pistol panic encounter, AR guy is favored but it's not like you don't have a chance. even pistols will down in 1 headshot against no helmet. if you know what you're doing in this game then surviving the first few minutes means you have a shot at winning.

Pubg actually has a learning curve to it. Sure, lots of RNG involved but that's also part of what makes it great, every match is unpredictable and when you get a good one going the fact that if you die you'll lose everything you have makes you really want to fight with all you got to protect it. Combine that with how hard it is to win and when that victory screen finally comes it's all the sweeter. I think that's the game's biggest appeal, winning is actually difficult so everyone who queues into that lobby has set it as a goal to do it no matter what it takes. The rng argument for this game is actually extremely weak once you start getting good at it. Better guns help? Sure. But people describe it as if finding any gun is extremely rare or as if you have no chance whatsoever against a dude with a rifle if you have an SMG, both of which are not true at all. You can win a match with nothing but a mini uzi and tier 1 gear, i know because i have done it. Positioning and actually knowing where to go at any given time is so much more important than what weapon you're using.

Playing pubg feels like things are nearly out of your hands as to how the game plays. In saying that, I think thats part of what the appeal is. Even the worst person at videogames will at some point come out on top by sheer chance, and the best player can be in the wrong place at the wrong time and get taken out by someone who has just started the game, good players know the ins and outs of the game and that knowledge allows them to swing the odds more in their favour, but not necessarily guarantee victory.
This is also why I personally dont like it, I dont like that my "fun" for a session is almost randomly decided. When I play a game I want to have fun, not roll a dice to see if thats whats going to happen this time. I want to achieve victory, not be given it by bad players this round and the odds just so happening to be in my favor by giving me a good weapon early, but not the next, where I happen to land next to someone who happened to have the odds in their favour and has an SKS and a squadmate.

Yes, a lot of companies will make knockoffs, and you can choose not to play them. I don't see the problem. You can complain that the money spent on those games isn't going toward projects you'd enjoy more, but what are the actual chances that it would? If it's not this dumb trend, it's some other dumb trend. Speaking for myself, I can't recall a time in the last 20 years when the vidya industry had huge trends that I cared about, but I always had more than enough games to play. I have come to belive that /v/ is just allergic to RNG. I really like PUBG and love XCOM and both games are contantly shit on here because "it's rng there's nothing i could do", while in both games it's actually all about doing what you can with your abilities to counteract the RNG. It's about risk acessment and being able to turn a bad situation around, minimizing your losses.
