>pikehammers/grandmaces/mauls over halberds/axes
Yes.

>hammers/maces over hatchets
Maybe.

>clubs/staves over swords (any length)
No.

>blackjacks over knives
Situational.

Basically larger size = allowing easier use of a weapon's sheer weight as opposed to relying on a correctly-aimed blade cleave, otherwise sharper is better if going for easy handling.

Spears and javelins are still the best.

Depends on who is using it and what the target is wearing. It doesn't take much strength or skill to poke somebody with a pointy object, but an equally long blunt weapon will be much heavier. However, it gets much harder to use said pointy object to kill a person in rigid armor because you have to hit parts of him that are less protected. A blunt weapon's effectiveness, while lessened by many armors, will not be affected as strongly as a blade.

Swords and shields have been used to great effect by a number of cultures, most notably the Romans, but by themselves swords (besides greatswords, which effectively are polearms, and some types of cavalry) tend to be a sidearm. You can more or less comfortably wear a sword so they can be used in civilian life, and ability to wear a sword makes them a good choice as a backup weapon, whether your primary weapon is a polearm, a bow or a gun. That's how samurai used them as well: their primary weapons of war were bows (yumi), spears (yari), polearms (naginata) or arquebuses (tanegashima). Swords have been incredibly prevalent throughout history in pretty much all cultures, but you have to understand they tend not to be the primary weapon of war (at least without a shield).

In relation to blunt weapons, it depends on the context. Clubs and truncheons and such like have been used since forever but if you think of weapons of war since metallurgy, they have rarely been the weapon of choice for historical combatants given a choice between the two. A sword is more nimble (weight might be similar but balance is not), it's longer, many types of sword offer better hand-protection and in unarmoured combat swords deal more immediately incapacitating injuries. Plus, it's easier to carry. In unarmoured context sword holds pretty much all of the advantages. In terms of armoured combat, cuts from a sword are rendered completely ineffective and while there are armoured fighting techniques with a sword (using them as a lever wrestling the opponent, targeting gaps in armour), you start seeing percussive weapons like war hammers, maces and various polearms like the poleaxe. In armoured 1vs1 fighting on foot, the poleaxe tends to be the king. In terms of one-handed weapons, swords (using said half-swording techniques) and maces (and an occasional war hammer, although at least in Europe they were mostly cavalry weapons) were both used.

TLDR: Polearms (be they spears, pikes, lances, halberds, poleaxes or whatever) have in most cultures in most of the history been the primary melee weapons of war, although swords with a shield have also made a case for themselves. Equally swords have been in most of the history the premier sidearm. For this reason, it's not fair to compare the two: of course a poleaxe beats a sword, but on similar token it's unusable as a sidearm and anyone with a poleaxe likely also had a sword (and so did Greek hoplites even though they primarily used spears, and so did rifle-armed soldiers in the 19th century in colonial wars where they might have expected to need to defend themselves in hand-to-hand combat).

When comparing equal to equal, ie. wearable sidearms (warhammers to swords), swords have the definite edge in unarmoured combat and in armoured combat both have been used.

How viable is an axe in combat?
And out of curiosity, how would an axe fair against a glaive?

if you can come close enough with a Tomahawk, you can damage your enemies weapon and hurt him, depending on armor

For sheer versatility, nothing beats a good longsword. It triples as a sword, spear and mace where needed.

It's not drawn, these things were made on wooden printers, the artists had to carve out the image several times, each color separately.

>Why not just paint shit?
They did, that shit doesn't survive through the ages anywhere near as well as publicly available prints do.

Hatchet is a fine backup weapon, especially if you're a small group on the move that needs to cut and fix supplies along with a small buckler.

Glaive>axe though.
All you have to do is hold and point, thats the trick with all stabby reach weapons, you cant doge something you need to walk into to attack somebody, its literally not possible.

Gladius is basically a hand axe, but with a piercing point. Thats how a lot of bronze age short swords perform.
So axes faires fine.
